Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

This story about an asteroid is really disconcerting.

An asteroid between 130 meters and 260 meters in size was discovered only 10-12 days before its closest approach to Earth (at about 290,000 km from Earth). This one just happened a few weeks ago. This article also discusses the April 2029 asteroid that I mentioned earlier.

This article claims that Apophis, the name given to the April 2029 asteroid will pass 30,000 km (18,641 miles) from earth.

I'm looking for something already built. 10 acres minimum.

I've been looking for awhile. I have also seen a lot of price cuts in the past month or so.
The trend is down for sure. That's what they're hoping for. I've contemplated selling. I've got 50, 20 min from downtown. I'd have to go somewhere though.

One thing I've learned in my years of tearing down pallets...

Epal (European) = awesome. Great boards, little tear out, boards typically run at least 3/4 inch before going through the planer.

American made = suck donkey balls. Thin, the stringers are mostly useless, lots of reuse with a butt-ton of cut nails in them.

Except the American red oak pallets which typically are decent.

I don't know if it's the wood used or the construction, but keep in mind that European oak is a different species than American oak.

The Epals I've come across are softwood and I haven't come across a hardwood one yet. Though if I get 3/4 oak boards on one, I'd be happier than a pig in slop.

Yep looks like the 2029 object would be extinction for humanity with a direct strike. Wow. I remember when I learned that the reason we get blindsided so much by these objects is because at any given time, we can’t see ANY objects headed our way from the same general direction as the Sun...due to being blinded by its brightness. So we really have no idea what is headed this way from that direction. Thats pretty scary honestly. Astronomers also say that if we didn't have Jupiter, with its huge mass and gravity to protect us from objects coming towards earth from beyond our solar system that life as we know it would have probably been destroyed many times over. Thanks for posting these links and stuff. My favorite part of VN is learning stuff that other folks post about.

Yeah. I find this stuff fascinating. This article that I linked today was better than the story I saw on weather.com.

That would be extinction level strike???

I am not ao sure aboot that

Correct. They were talking about it passing about 19,900 miles away from Earth. They said it would be visible to the naked eye in certain parts of the world.

They say that Meteor Crater in Arizona was formed by a meteor about 150 feet wide and hit with a force 150 times greater than an atomic bomb.

Apparently an average cruise ship is about 1,000 feet long and 200 feet wide, so I'm guessing a direct strike on earth could be an extinction event.

Me neither McDad. I was basing my statement on the 1 above stating that an object with a fraction of the mass of the 2029 object striking with the force of 150 nuclear blasts (usually when references like these are made, they are compared to the warheads dropped on Japan...which actually have about the same yield as "tactical" nukes these days.) A video I watched about the huge crater in Russia made a similar claim..the Tunguska event is the largest asteroid to strike Earth in modern (recorded) history and the blast was believed to be about 15 megatons, but the object actually broke apart in the atmosphere which greatly reduced the force of the impact such that it didnt even leave a crater. It did flatten and burn about 850 square miles of forest though.

There are simply too many unknowns for me to even attempt to calculate the impact. We know that Force= mass x acceleration but without knowing what the object is made of, nor how fast it is travelling, i have no idea what that force might be. Based on Tunguska being a fraction of the size though, and breaking up in the atmosphere but still yielding ~15 megatons I bet it will be pretty bad if that object strikes solid ground somewhere. Maybe similar to the "nuclear winter" scenarios discussed when the Yellowstone Volcano finally blows? It seems like the damage could also largely depend on exactly where on Earth the strike happened? Middle of the ocean? Huge waves that would wreck coastal cities maybe? Strike on land in Europe, Asia, or the Americas might kill everyone in a certain radius and the smoke and dust block out sunlight in a much larger area? So many variables lol. Hope we never have to actually witness any of it. Very interesting to think about though. Linked the Russian event below for anyone interested

looked up that deal on Amazon - grabbed one (49% off). Appreciate the heads up.

Between taking care of the wife and getting the garage cleared out for a new freezer, I missed the Prime Day deals; but I didn't see anything really better than 50% off. This discount was probably as good as Prime Day deals. My wife got me started on Anker stuff (back in her good days); it's all been good.

Next thing to look at is very efficient and reasonably priced heat and fan - maybe something like Dyson; it would be an easier choice if Dyson stuff was more reasonably priced. I was also thinking a couple of 1Kwh battery backups give some flexibility that a single 2K unit doesn't - one can be on the solar panel charging while the other is in use or one could be used in one space while the other is in use elsewhere. The drawback to that is that a 1K might not have the oomph to run a freezer or other larger item like a 2K (or bigger) would - have to experiment, but I think a 1K is probably a decent starting point. To be honest our power has been pretty reliable; we haven't had any extended weather related power outages recently.

According to NASA scientists, an asteroid that's 60 miles (96 kilometers) wide could wipe out all life on Earth. However, the Global Challenges Foundation estimates that asteroids larger than 0.62 miles (1 kilometer) wide could cause global damage that could disrupt human civilization and potentially wipe out the human species.

That's from my own personal research company out of Mountain View, CA. Small
Outfit but do good work.

Side note: The Global Challenges Foundation sounds like the backup name for the The Human Fund.

Assuming you are talking about an indoor heater with fan we bought this one for our master bath and are very pleased. Not necessarily cheap but not Dyson priced either. We’ve got a Dyson regular sized vac and two sticks. They are great and we love them. But … $$$

Land prices have sky rocketed. My daughter and her husband have been looking for two years. $10-$20 thousand an acre for anything within an hour of Knoxville. They have saved a significant amount of cash just can't find something they feel they can afford and then have funds to build.

Can't see this getting any better as long as the individual is pitted against commercial investment markets for single family homes. It's basically the same kind of problem that existed in other markets before antitrust legislation. An individual can't compete financially with a company that can leverage assets elsewhere. Seems like we aren't as advanced as we think when we keep tripping over problems that were addressed decades ago. In some cases it is the imbalance in housing markets, too; and the influx of what should be illegal immigrants from places like CA to normal places like TN.

Our new 5*QB recruit saying we should see a new surprise recruit announcement? In addition to the 5 bigtime players we are expected to beat UGA for head to head?!? (2 down, 3 to go)

Could this be 4* lineman Gaston or even 5* lineman Perry?

I have 4 years left. I sent coach an email. He probably leaked it to Gaston. I'm not mad.

What if the asteroid hits near Montana igniting the super volcano under Yellowstone? Then you might as well kiss your butt goodbye. And that assumes there's not a second asteroid that hits the moon, sending it careening out of its orbit and slamming into the Earth.
