ZZ did it the whole NCAAT.I've played in this defensive system, full-court press baseline to baseline 40 minutes of hell. It's hard to go 100% for much longer than 3 minutes at a time. Imagine trying to run a mile at a dead sprint and then shoot a 3-pointer with proficiency. Turn that into half a mile and it's doable.
It's a really fun defensive system.
Marshall's top player averaged 30 minutes/game. With slight adjustments, it could work and make the top players happy. Your starting 5 could be in for the first and last 3.5 minutes of every quarter. Based on Marshall's minutes stats, that kind of looks like her normal pattern.
Maybe with this style....evaluation is more important than recruitment. Meaning, maybe its about getting the right players that aren't the 5* types, than getting the highest rated girls. This is stats from LV and Marshall this year. Check out minutes played and compare. My question is will the minutes played disparity keep us from recruiting elite portal players and HS kids?
She'll have to be a Helluva recruiter to do that. I hope she can. I've not watched any of her games so I don't know the substitution pattern she employs. If she can get elite players , I truly believe she can win. She needs a BULLDOG recruiter on staff to get the ball rolling.None yet. She just got here.
I see some people making a lot of Jewel Spear comments about being undecided. I just read what she said and to be honest it does not make a lot of sense to me. The team gave her approval to be part of a leadership team. She and others shared their input with the AD. They made a change. If you announced as part of the leadership team you were returning after sharing your input, then why are you suddenly undecided. Sounds like one or two things. She is seeking to get a guarantee on her role as the go-to-player on this team from the new coach. Or she does not think this fits her style of play. Either one is fine because that’s her choice. I just feel they need to let her decide one way or the other then move on or move forward. That doesn’t sound like a decision she is making in the best interest of a team. This is a personal decision.
As long as they can shoot and play defense that’s all she needsShe'll have to be a Helluva recruiter to do that. I hope she can. What's Spear have to do with Beeman.
That won't win championships. In women's basketball, more than any other sport, the best players win.Maybe with this style....evaluation is more important than recruitment. Meaning, maybe its about getting the right players that aren't the 5* types, than getting the highest rated girls.
In a way, this is a moneyball approach. She doesn't need the best players. She needs the right ones. And we may all disagree about what that looks like. But....I really think if she can get 12-14 girls who will come in and run their rears off, play suffocating defense, and hit a few shots, we are gonna wear some teams down. That's essentially a no huddle offense in basketball.
So you're saying she can sell thus to elite portal and HS players? The point is that there's very little difference in the minutes/g between Marshall's players and the Lady Vols last year, any variance is insignificant. If you take the top three in minutes and compare each team there's like two minutes per game average difference.
Jewel Spear is a rhythm player, u can’t just take her out after she hits a couple of shots. That’s the conversations Spear will have with her, we will know how the meeting went once we hear Spears’s decision. The point is that there's very little difference in the minutes/g between Marshall's players and the Lady Vols last year, any variance is insignificant. Her system will work with elite players. The only question is can she get elite players.I thought the press conference was fine.
Coach Caldwell was articulate, confident with out being cocky. She was self-deprecating which I think is a great trait. Sniped John Adams which is a big plus in my book!
Was honest that it hadn’t sunk in yet. My favorite humorous moment was early on when she noted that she loved basketball and as a 5’10” post knew coaching was the only route open to her.
I am concerned her system may not work in the SEC. Seems like all those teams that press continuously are nuisances but don’t win championships. We’ll see. Hoping for the best for Coach Caldwell and our great players!
