haha....Sab you jump on every possible opportunity to post those. lol. I love it.

Shanman, I wouldnt get your hopes up. My hopes are starting to run dry :(

Yeah I am not happy as well. Newton is the safer option IMO. The 1 and only thing Marve has above Newton is that he will be here 1 year longer to learn the O. IMO idk how big a advantage that is because all I have heard is how easy the O is to pick up. Marve to us is not official yet, so there is still hope. Just not alot.

Guys, why is it that we seem to be able to attract juco's (Newton), transfers (Marve), and the walk on QB (name slips my mind right now), but we aren't able to get a commit from a HS QB?

Is it just that these guys are older, wiser, and understand college depth charts... or maybe they aren't sitting back enjoying being recruited by tons of great programs like Heaps/Scroggins are? I still think it's crazy we could end up with three new Qbs on the depth chart before we got a commit from a HSer.

I think thats the biggest thing.

Newton played just a few snaps in a spread offense. Marve started a year in a pro style offense. I don't understand why everyone is so high on Newton. Not that I don't think he has upside but what has he done to be #1 on your board?

The staff has the right idea with him IMO. Wait til he plays a few games in Juco and then evaluate him.

They are trying to get guys in here that have a little more expereince than a kid straight out of his high school prom...They are still after the big guns but want someone who while the younger kids are learning can take over for awhile until they are ready to rock and roll....Marve would be a perfect fit for this offense as he knows it or a variation of it very well, Newton could be a work in progress but the benefits of having a guy with his athletic ability and skill is enormous...Take Marve, Newton and a young stud fresh out of high school and build them a big strong O-Line and you got the recipe for future success IMO :dance2:

I would be very happy to steal Newton, Marve and then one of our top guys like Scroggins/Heaps. Then in 2011 we get another great recruit. Then we start looking like USC with their embarrassment of riches scenario. Me likey a lot

It's a fascination with athletic ability IMO. Everyone falls for the 6' 6" guy that can run a 4.5 forty.

Not saying it's bad to do that, but height/weight numbers don't always tell you if the guy can play.

That is dead on.

do we want a commitment from a high schooler?? not sure we do

Guys it seems that there is a clear mutual attaction between Orgeron and the retreads. Having been personally rehabilitated on a few fronts, Ed has a soft spot for these guys and they feel more comfortable with him.

I admire that willingness to give a guy a second or third chance. Look what bringing Jevon Snead to Ole Miss has done for Jevon.

Most coaches wouldn't be willing to stick their neck out for these guys and I'm sure UT will get repaid with interest. You can't buy loyalty like that.

There's little to risk when you tell a kid..."Alright, we're willing to give you a second chance here, but you try to pull the same kind of stuff here, and that's it...you're out on the street before you have time to wake up!"

Kiffin's already done that as you may have noticed

I think we are going to wait on Cam until more is seen from him in JUCO. There is not much footage out there to really give him the proprer look.

I'll admit to some fascination on my part associated with Newton's size and speed, but agree with Justin's point.

You just can't train someone to be 6'6, 250, 4.5. But as a starting point, that's not a bad place to begin development.

Thats a understatment.

Yeah... :eek:lol:

I'm thinking that's a pretty smart portion of the population... of elite athletes.

Hope he comes to UT!

I'd be delighted with signing Newton and Marve without a 2010 Frosh. If we get both of them, I can't see the hurry to ink a Frosh and several have hinted that the staff may like some of the 2011 class QB's better than the 2010 choices. We also have Stephens and Rozier to learn more about this fall.

Signing (or enrolling) Marve along with continued success with OL commits, a respectable showing (6-6 with a lot of heart!) this fall, and we're in fine shape to recruit an outstanding 2010 class that will build on the 2009 class.

I am imagining a scenario that includes Newton/ Marve/ Heaps or Scroggins. Ala Brown/Oku/T Williams. There is noreason we cannot pull the two JuCOs and a top flight HS QB this year. I have a feeling that if Mqrve comes here then we see Newton go to Miss State. Still leaves the door open for Scroggins or Heaps

If we didn't then why do we offer? Surely 4 star HS Qb's are not backup plans in case we don't get a Juco or transfer...

His point is more of, he doesn't think (and neither do I) that the staff has much faith in the current crop of HS QB's. That doesn't mean things couldn't change on that front tomorrow, but right now we both believe that's what they feel.

they have offered over 200 players. they won't take commitments from 200 players. You make tons of offers but you only take 25-30 commitments. You don't take a commitment from kids when you think you have a chance with better kids. If they lose out on others they like better, then sure they might end up with one or more..

schools lose out every year on kids they would rather have and end up with kids they would not have perferred. Happens to all schools

one additional comment. This coaching staff does not recruit to stars. they recruit to their assessment of the talent levels.
