1) There is nothing wrong with an American President demanding that a fellow NATO member pay their membership fees.What’s so bad about making a country pay or contribute their portion? You going to let a tenant stay in your house if they don’t pay their rent? No you’re going to kick them out.
2) There is nothing wrong with an American President withdrawing the United States from NATO if the US is having to carry too much of the financial burden.
3) There is nothing wrong with an American President trying to remove a fellow NATO member from the organization, if they are habitually delinquent with their membership fees.
Donald Trump said much more than that, however, and it was irresponsible and reckless.
There is something wrong with an American President encouraging an adversary to "do whatever the hell they want," to a strategic American ally, following an invasion, just because of delinquent fees. What Trump said was irrational.
