I’ll admit it… I’m very confused. Either we have a plan and we are getting guys that aren’t being talked about much right now, or we are just totally whiffing on every player we are reportedly interested in. I’m trying to be patient but it’s very clear that other programs are getting exactly who they want, so when are we going to start getting the guys who we want?

Maybe the guys we want aren’t even in the portal yet? Remember that a lot of the guys who numerous programs want already knew where they were going before entering the portal. Some may end up changing their minds after entering, but a lot of them have a good idea.

Last year, we had transfer announcements out of the blue. I don't recall that Castles, Campbell, Pili, and GJL were discussed much until they announced. I guess we have to do this every year though.

I believe UT will keep any Portal commits quiet until after ESD and after the initial transfer portal closes. We don't want to scare current players or HS commits off due to bringing in new Portal players.

I’m sure you were also UNDERWHELMED when a struggling VA Tech QB transferred to Tennessee back in early 2021.

I think what you are seeing is some coaching staffs are choosing to avoid players who shopping around for top dollar, right or wrong. We will see if that pays off but much like the NFL coaches are having to decide between a couple of high dollar transfers or 5-6 mid range ones. I think the coaching staff quickly realized last year that they are going to need a lot of help on the defensive side of the ball. They may find that the portal can't fix every issue or they may find out defensive problems can be fixed quickly through the portal.

At the time of us picking up Hendon, I didn't have much of any expectation for him or the program considering what we were dealing with due to Pruitt. So no, I wasn't underwhelmed. Maybe indiferrent to it all.

With that said, all becuase a player performs well in Heupel's system doesn't mean there weren't even better options avavailable. Sure we can target some Tulane kid, and I'm sure he will contribute and have a good year. But that doesn't mean we couldn't have done be better.

I have high standards becuase of what Heupel has done with our program since taking over. I give him tons of credit and am very happy with the work he has done. But this is a very critical window we are facing the next two years where we can dramatically catapault this program forward. Maybe we still get there in due time, regardless. But take one step back and there are a slew of other SEC teams looking to jump us in current relevancy.

So its urgebt for us to sustain momentum despite having a gap of upperclassmen missing from this roster. That's why I'm advocating for the best of the best right now. Go all in with the portal. Pay up for the best additions. Then once we have a full roster we can depend more on the incoming recruiting classes to build the program with. But if we drop the ball the next two years, don't take full advantage of the portal, and have any drop-off, its going to be tough to keep top 10 recruiting classes.
