Recruiting Football Talk VII

They need to crack down hard on all the tampering. Teams shouldn't be allowed to contact players on another team's roster until that player has already entered the transfer portal. Then he's fair game.

Teams are not allowed to talk to players directly but there are many other ways

College coaching sounds like a nightmare job right now. Need two recruiting departments, one for NIL and current roster and one for HS players. Wonder if anyone even recruits JuCo anymore.

This business has been happening forever, just now it's more public.

I know. Before even seeing this post from you, I edited my previous post to include elimination of those "many other ways". It isn't difficult to eliminate. You just have to make it so punitive that it isn't worth the risk. For example, you could say that teams found guilty of illegal contact would lose the ability to accept in-bound players from the transfer portal for the next 5 years. I think you would find that would do the trick. Also, I think the majority of head coaches would welcome that type of change. They're all complaining about the Wild-West atmosphere right now.

It was the RB. . . plus they cheated the whole time.
How…by doing everything simple and daring you to stop it? I was stationed at Kirtland AFB during that era SURROUNDED by rabid Cowboys fans. Watching a game in the day room, one of them talked about rolling with Steve Buerlein. I told the whole bunch that with the talent Jimmy had accumulated, Buerlein could win a Super Bowl, but Aikman is a STAR and will win you more! Proved correct. No one’s argued Emmitt’s effect more than me despite his open pursuit of my idol Sweetness’s rushing record, and many discount him in comparison to pure runner Barry Sanders because of the Cowboys OL. Emmitt kept going at you with no let up unlike any back since Payton with a HC who prioritized that. ANY OL would have become historic blocking for him, because he emphasized an OL’s strengths more than Sanders did with his freestyling. That being said, Troy was big armed, deadly accurate and willing to take a back seat to win…never discount that. Elway won his Super Bowls when he had faded enough to play second fiddle to Terrell Davis, yet still make the needed passing plays…similar blueprint. Favre won one and lost to an inferior team the next season. Had to be THE REASON they won. Marino zero. Personally have them rated higher as talents, but less as Super Bowl team quarterbacks.

Even Emmitt Smith discounts himself versus the pure runner Barry Sanders. He has said multiple times that had Barry not retired so young, he would have set the rushing record at a level that would have never been broken. He repeated a statement to that effect in the brand new Barry Sanders documentary now on Amazon video.

I agree with you on Elway and Aikman. It was Terrell Davis that was the key to Elway's Super Bowl winning teams. Aikman's biggest strength was that it was more important to him to win games than to chase individual stats and accolades. He didn't have an issue playing to the team's strengths, even though he wasn't the team's #1 strength.

They need to crack down hard on all the tampering. Teams shouldn't be allowed to contact players (or his family, agent(s), friends, former coaches, or any other workarounds) on another team's roster until that player has already entered the transfer portal. Then he's fair game.
That's not what's happening. The players are reaching out to directly or indirectly to other collectives or representatives of the team(s).

I get what you're saying, but it's not like Saban and his recruiting staff are calling the best players of every team. Sometimes the players stay engaged with assistants on other staffs because of the relationship that they built. I know our coaches stay in contact with guys that they barely missed on, just in case (during the times that they are allowed to).

Mostly the transfer stuff is handled just like HS recruiting, but the inroads and relationships are already built, so it's easier for handlers/family/representatives to work with collectives/team reps.
