Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

It's almost unfathomable to consider, but '23-'24 is going to end up being Rick's worst Tennessee team yet. I know, I know, we're only 7 games in & college basketball is a long season. But, what I witnessed tonight shook me to my core. I'm struggling to recall a UT team in ANY sport display the kind of sorry as* effort we witnessed tonight.

With one of the most experienced, veteran-laden teams in the country, that's just a tad bit alarming. Now, without Knecht, it'll be unwatchable. This would be a two win team right now without him. Anyone confident that we'll now be relying on Gainey & Josiah to create the offense moving forward? Lol.

After a 14-15 win type of year that's coming, Rick will finally ride off into the sunset, & Justin Gainey will be UT's next coach. I'm actually really excited about Gainey, I think he'll breathe some fresh energy into the program & move our offense into the 21st century. I hate being a Vols fan. Football program is back to reality & a complete afterthought again, & the basketball program is somehow even worse, when everyone expected greatness from it this year. Hopefully, Tony gets the baseball boys back to Omaha this summer..
Good grief....

You goobers need to check a poster's stats before replying to a thread. This impostor is clearly a troll from another fan base.

I note that this poster joined VN the day of the football game against Georgia, put the name of Georgia's football coach in his username, and writes some of the most absurd posts ever to have graced this site. I don't know why such obvious trolling is allowed to stand.

So they were down by 21 on the road st Chapel Hill and fought back to be within less than 10 at the buzzer, and you call that the worst effort you've ever seen?

Surely ye jest.

Ding, ding, ding! I know our fan base is really gullible, but what happened to minimum posting requirements before starting a thread?

I hate our fanbase. Y’all chased off Fulmer and we’re still a joke because of it. I went to Tennessee for football, but let it be known to all kids who are looking at Tennessee from other states—our fanbase is toxic and fires competitive coaches and then puts our team into the dungeon.

What you should be spewing your toxicity at—is the officiating scross every sport Tennessee endures. What goes on with Tennessee athletics is disgraceful. And our fanbase would rather spew venom at our coaches rather than the officiating that takes us out of our rhythm.

Look at the stats. Across sports. It’s ridiculous. Something has to give bedusss it’s not a coincidence.

While I agree with sentiment with Barnes, how is the running off good coaches any different than most programs?

Georgia ran off Mark Richt, Auburn ran off Tubberville, Gene Chizik, and Gus Malzahn, Florida ran off Dan Mullen recently, LSU ran off Les Miles and Ed Odgeron who both won National Titles and were, at least, on par with Fulmer.

So how is Tennessee fan base toxic and those fanbases are not? The different is most of those schools (notably Georgia) landed better hires after running off successful coaches.

That being said, it would be a DUMB move to fire Barnes, he has us as a solid competitor in Basketball. I knew we were not going to win @UNC going into the season, idiots on here just bought the kool aid. We will see what Tennessee looks like in March. I always though our deepest run would be from a lower seed like a 7 or 8. Pearl's best run was with a 6 seed and not any of his 3 teams that finished as 2 seeds.

Because offense is why we lost yesterday?! Lmao
Right lol. Offense was the least of our problems last night. Teams rarely even sniff 80 points against us. 100 points is mind-blowing! Reminded me of that game vs UK a few years back were they dropped 107 on us. There was nothing that we could do to stop them. That game was an outlier though (which I'm hoping this UNC game is the same) because our defense held teams to less than 59 ppg after that game.

Also worth saying that beatdown made us 11-5 and after that we went on a huge winning streak and only lost two more games in the reg season and then went on to win the SECT and beat that UK team twice that scored 107 on us. We held them to 63 & 62 points the other two games. Let's hope this loss vs UNC does the same thing!

I was shocked with Tennessee's #9 ranking, you can find my posts on here. I thought this would be a "down" year. This team clearly doesn't have it together now.

The one item that I disagree with is that Barnes isn't coaching, I see him coaching the **** out of this team and his style keeps us in games. Barnes needs to hire better shooters/scorers. Ironically, this doesn't just seem to be a Tennessee issue but SEC as a whole. They recruit athletes but not scorers. This is why SEC teams don't get to the Final Four very often.

Name them. Of course you can't name one better than Barnes who would come here. Barnes is a great coach and will stay here as long as he feels like it
It's all about the $. UT has everything if not more than most schools to support bigtime basketball. Cmon. You act like we're MTSU hiring a coach. News Flash... Barnes isn't the "be all/end all" of college basketball. Far from it.

BS. I know the difference. I get you just don't enough to know any better.

Well Duke and UNC just recently lost their HoF coaches to retirement and had to hire within the program. Two guys that were former assistants/players and that were first time HCs. We are not Duke or UNC. We'd have to take a shot on an up-and-comer and try to strike gold like Bama did with Oats (who had probably the best teams he''ll ever have last year) and only made it to the Sweet 16.

University of Louisville (way better program than ours) settled on Kenny Payne after Chris Mack who looked awesome at Xavier failed.

Good points. However... we struck gold with Pearl who came from UMW. I'm sure there are plenty of coaches out there who will be household names in the future. The panic over moving on from Barnes (which is inevitably going to happen one way or another) is short sighted.

Look at A&M and tell me again how throwing money at it is sure to work

But then struck out with CCM and Tyndall. It's super hard to find those "future house hold names".

There's no panic. You're being the short sided reactionary. We just went through a gauntlet. Like I said, you don't know any better

WTH are you talking about? Barnes has been here eight years and is in his NINTH now. There is nothing "reactionary" about my opinion of him. He is what he is. Are you related to Barnes? If so... I'm sorry to have offended you.
