Windy's football discussion thread.

Like I said I don’t want him fired and I agree he’s better than any coaches we’ve had for a while, which is a very low bar after Pruitt, Jones and Dooley. But there are some caution flags to see. This year we’ve been inconsistent, even in the wins. South Carolina last year, the Florida game was a very bad loss, and Missouri yesterday while they’re good we should’ve had a better showing than that.

Heupel needs time to cook, as the kids say but he needs to improve as well. He’s got to find a way to get more consistent play from the team and make better adjustments at halftime and deal with adversity when trailing at halftime. Hopefully Nico will bring new life to the offense. But if we’re still having these conversations after the next two years, then he probably isn’t the guy long term.
Is it a low bar though?
Florida has our number like we have Kentuckys number. But look at their record. They’ve had just as much trouble finding a winner and it’s easier in Florida than here.
Maybe it’s harder to win than we all want to admit.

Dude. He’s the best thing we’ve had since Fulmer. He’s had back to back seasons better than almost any from the last 20 years. We’re paying him 9 million a year.

He’s not being fired….for at least 5 years.
Everyone might as well forget that.
Absolutely no one should be talking about Huepel being fired. That's the dumbest thing ever. He's miles ahead of previous coaches and we are still accumulating talent and depth that we need.

I went and looked it up.
Since 2007, Tennessee has only won 8 or more games 4 times.

Ya. I’m not going back to that.

I think so yes. They were all bad to very bad coaches. So bad that they make 8-4 seasons seems good. That should be the floor at least to me.
I picked Florida as a loss before the season. They are stacked in talent. Just because they’re coach is a numbskull doesn’t mean they aren’t talented
Their coach is a numbskull and that’s what makes losing to them even worse. Specially watching other teams, like Arkansas who is awful beat them.

As far as records go, I figured we’d be around 9-3 this year depending on the breaks. None have went our way. But it’s the way we’ve played this year that gives me pause. Again under no circumstances am I wanting Heupel fired or even on the hot seat but if these things are still happening after year 4 then yeah I think it’s definitely fair. I’d say I’m cautiously in wait and see mode. He was great and we caught lightning in a bottle last year but if we’re still struggling to beat Missouri and Florida in year 4 then he probably isn’t going to win championships here, SEC or otherwise.

Great coaches are a very rare thing.
The bar isn’t low. It’s our desire for wins that artificially raises that bar

You’re right on that. Sabans success at Bama has tainted everyone’s view. Sometimes I get lost in that. He’s a once in a generation coach. I’m hoping that Smart is a flash in a pan but it’s not looking that way.

Exactly.
I put urban cryer in that category. **** human but apparently great coach.there are a couple others too. So compare that against every other coach who has come and gone.

Lol. Where am I?
Last night, I had a long conversation with a college buddy whose nephew played on Kirby’s first championship team at UGA. I was digging for whatever nuggets I could get as to how the soup is being made. His opinion, it is a combination of culture and a large percentage of the best players still value playing for championships more than squeezing the most out of NIL. He expounded on the cultural aspect although to my ears it didn’t sound much different than Dabo’s family shtick although maybe more like a fraternity than a family.

One of the worst parts about losing is everyone with and without a brain has an opinion that they think is truth, and feels the need to share it. Including me.

Not sure I have a point, just saying.

Kirby took over a good solid 9-3 team.

If we'd gone 8-4 last year then 10-2 this year things wouldn't look too bad at all. But there are other working parts in that too. Would Golesh been offered a job and left after last year?

After year 3 hes gonna have a pretty good record, especially for what he inherited, and either way, next year is gonna start the same way. Next year is where I think we really see what kind of a coach he is. Good or bad or anything in between.
