Windy's football discussion thread.

Yeah same here. I had planned to watch the Georgia game and keep up with the others that mattered to our situation. After our game I turned off football and opened my books.
I never even turned it on. I checked the score after rehearsal, and it was 7-3 coming up on the half, I think. I figured, ok, it's one of THOSE games and got back to homework, figuring I'd follow the score online and turn it on when things got exciting.

Checked again, and figured welp.

The Florida game was embarrassing and even more so in retrospect. Yesterdays game was embarrassing. We looked awful in nearly every part of the game. As I said last night, even in our wins this year we haven’t looked like we’re clicking on all cylinders.

I’m nowhere close to Heupel out. But his road record sucks and he has 1 win at Tennessee while trailing at the half. He needs to improve and he needs to figure out to do at halftime. If Nico flops, then Heupel is going to be in a bad spot. His road record is really worrying to me, as well as his lack of adjustments at halftime. Beating Bama and Florida last year will buy him time, but years 3 and 4 will prove what kind of coach he is and if he will last here.

He’s got a contract for $9 million a year through 2029. He ain’t gonna change nuthin. I suspect that without another Hendon, we’re gonna have 2023-esque seasons for the rest of the decade.

Jimbo Fishers buyout is 76 million and he’s likely getting fired. Tennessee and firing coaches is nothing new. Like I said I don’t want him gone, but if he continues to struggle in year 4 like we did this year then he isn’t the guy long term.

But on the flip side of that, the sec is changing and the playoffs are expanding, if he can have another year like last year, we’d be in the playoffs.

It’s just entertainment.
When I was a child I’d be mad for a week. Now I’m pretty much over it by the end of the game.
The excitement of a win hangs with me for about 24 hours.

But let’s be honest, other than things like championship who can remember all the past games.

I work for a Mizzou grad who was texting me last night. A reasonable guy. He had forgotten that Tennessee had a four game winning streak and so had I. He thought it had been longer and I thought it had been shorter. He’s also the guy who pointed out that they will now lose to Florida. Apparently it’s the Dink way. Invest your energy in a revenge game and then lose the next one. He thinks they will lose the next 2. As @volwindy said. We’ll see

It's embarrassing to see crappy teams like Arkansas go to Gainesville and get a win and others not struggle against Florida, while we just do the Tennessee thing and lose to them.

I'm not a get rid of Heupel either, but I just see him keeping us as a midtier SEC team, especially with the divisions going.

Dude. He’s the best thing we’ve had since Fulmer. He’s had back to back seasons better than almost any from the last 20 years. We’re paying him 9 million a year.

He’s not being fired….for at least 5 years.
Everyone might as well forget that.

Struggle?

Are you serious?
We’re ahead of schedule with last year and the media all said this was at least a 5 loss team this year.

Like I said I don’t want him fired and I agree he’s better than any coaches we’ve had for a while, which is a very low bar after Pruitt, Jones and Dooley. But there are some caution flags to see. This year we’ve been inconsistent, even in the wins. South Carolina last year, the Florida game was a very bad loss, and Missouri yesterday while they’re good we should’ve had a better showing than that.

Heupel needs time to cook, as the kids say but he needs to improve as well. He’s got to find a way to get more consistent play from the team and make better adjustments at halftime and deal with adversity when trailing at halftime. Hopefully Nico will bring new life to the offense. But if we’re still having these conversations after the next two years, then he probably isn’t the guy long term.
