China Thread

Sigh…

Again, not me. Vietnam, Phillipines, etc. That is who is upset about this.
I plan on seeing the movie, actually.

You still can’t see the forest for the trees on this one. Take a lap.
the 8 dash line in the movie doesn't get anywhere close to where Vietnam is on that map, like it does IRL. and the phillipines aren't even on the map, so unless they are complaining about that too, it seems foolish to complain about an imaginary line on an imaginary map where they don't even exist for them to be insulted by the imaginary line.

they can be insulted or angry all they want, doesn't mean I think they have an actual argument.

movie is decent enough, nothing special, not terrible. falls back on the typical hollywood trope of fighting stereotypes with stereotypes. but if you come out of that movie thinking its a propaganda piece for china i dont know what to say

You’re arguing the 9 dash is in the wrong place, so it can’t be the 9 dash. On a map that has a crown on England and excludes Japan.

Forest for the trees, man. Forest for the trees.

Everyone knows it’s the 9 dash
Vietnam knows it’s the 9 dash
China knows it’s the 9 dash
Warner Bros knows it’s the 9 dash

If you don’t think they should care, well that’s one thing. I could at least understand that to an extent.

But this insistence on your part that it’s just a random dashed line coming off China is silly at this point.

How many X-dashed lines are there in the world? There's nothing else it could be. The studio putting it in the film is a kiss to PRC's bottom. VN, PI, and other involved states are justified in any humbrage they may have taken, as we would be if they showed a map with our pre-Mexican War borders.

The studio didn’t even deny it.
They officially commented. Had every opportunity.

“That is not the nine dash line”. That would have been real easy to say. They didn’t.

They said “The map is not intended to make any real world statements”. Oh, ok.

I actually thought of Texas as an analogy too. Imagine a “crayon drawing” of “make believe” in a movie that showed Texas as part of Mexico. Would Texans and other Americans be upset?

WhY yOu sooo MaD?!?

How did we get possession of Hawaii? If you are whining about 9 Dash Line, then you should be just as equally outraged about that.

You keep using stuff in the past and judging it by today's standards. There were some guys named Atilla, Genghis who did the normal thing back then - just better than most, and that was the way of the world ... and accepted like it or not. "Conquered" and "conquest" are reasonably well known and historically accepted terms. By the time Boney did his part, it was not looked on as favorably. Slavery was commonplace once; now it's pretty much universally frowned on; colonialism has mostly passed. We acquired a lot of territories, possessions, trusts, etc along the way (generally as war reparations and the last as I recall at the end of WW2), and we have given them up when requested - Philippines, Micronesia, etc.

A comparable version of the Chinese idiocy with the dash 9 line would be to do one from the west coast surrounding Hawaii. But why stop there. There's Guam to consider and some other Pacific Trusts - the Aleutians for a better starting point, and then you could just throw in the Chinese junk, go historic, and rope in The Philippines, etc.

I still cannot belive how utterly stupid our policy has been. What did America get out of this other than a coupled dependent economy and spend trillions to militarily counter, whilst same time lose trillions in IP. Unreal.

but in this case, the offended parties aren't even shown on the map.....

I could understand about being upset that your country isn't on the map. that is something anyone looking at the map would be easily able to pick up on.

Then what would be our reaction if the US wasn't on the map but Mexico with its 1835 borders was?

I bet every single country over there has their own "dashed line" map. and I would be willing to bet one of them is 8 lines.

should China be offended that Great Britain has a crown? They controlled a good chunk of China back when the British Monarchs mattered.

my whole point is that this is people looking to be offended. If you look for it, you will find it. No average citizen is looking at that map and being offended over it on their own. I don't care where they are from. There isn't enough context to be offended over the lines unless you are going into it looking to be offended.

Got anything else besides these 8 dashes to think this is a piece of PRC propaganda? Can you tell me what the pink dots are? or what the pink and green blob is? you know why no one is upset about them? Because no one told anyone to be upset about them. Its a freaking Barbie map. Of ALL the freaking things people could be upset about China for I have zero clue how this is getting so much traction.

considering the movie mentions the "Country of California", I am going with.....absolutely zero.
Considering it shows a 14/15 dash line from Florida-ish to South America, I am going with zero.
Considering the ONLY two countries labeled on that map is the United States and England, and it shows us as all one color with Mexico and Canada, I would go with zero.
China isn't mentioned on the map or in the movie, its just "Asia". You are drawing a comparison that doesn't exist.

No other countries in the region have dashed line maps. China pulled theirs out of their lower colon in the 1940's.
The reason people are offended, as you seem to be trying very hard to ignore, is that it appears to give legitimacy to PRC's illegitimate land grab in the SCS.

except the line is not represented in the South China Sea.
except it doesn't not include ANY of the offended parties, the lines don't get down to where Vietnam is, like it does in the real world.
the map doesn't even have China.

there are at least 2 other dashed lines on the map, one in the Gulf, one off the coast of Africa. Whose claims are those pushing?

You’re just dug in and being obstinate at this point.

And you still can’t see the forest for the trees if you’re talking pink dots. And crowns, and blobs.

And for the last time - No one here is upset. No movie goers in America are upset.
It’s the sovereign nations of SE Asia that are upset.

You claim “it’s just a Barbie map”
Then declare “the line doesn’t extend far enough”

Lol man. Pick a damn lane. Jesus 😂

You are now saying that the doodles don't matter. So, this piece of "Chinese propaganda" doesn't actually have a deep meaning? Then why is anyone offended if there is no meaning to the dots, crown (which you have brought up multiple times), and blobs? Why would we assume meaning to these dashes?

don't forget there are two other sets of dashed lines on the map. Where is the Chinese propaganda in those? There are random dashed lines in the oceans in several locations. I haven't seen anyone come up with a theory about those, so I am curious about why this one particular line means something, when the rest don't. When you have to ignore 99% of the map to find and explain how one thing might be offensive, its probably not offensive.

Its clearly someone wanting to push an angle that always presents the map with Margot Robbie covering up the dashed lines on the map. A scene which doesn't happen in the movie so its not like its a still image taken unbiasedly from the movie. It was manufactured victimhood during a time of increased tensions.
