I agree with everything you said after the first sentence. I am all for not extending him. Resign him when the time comes if you want. Prudent stance for all pitchers, especially one you already control through their prime.TBF, the Braves' front office didn't fight Fried over 500,000. They are one of the teams that don't negotiate. They list their price. If the player doesn't agree, they go to arbitration.
I'm sure the Braves would like to keep him, but I doubt they would go long-term contract on a pitcher when developing pitchers is what they do. He may want to go back to California anyway, and the Dodgers would pay him.
But they absolutely did fight him over $500k. They are a file and trial team but certainly exchanged numbers with Fried prior to. It’s senseless to do with someone like Max especially in light of how much money the team makes and how much they’ve guaranteed in extensions to other guys.
