Wernher von Braun was the chief architect of the Saturn V launch vehicle, which was the superbooster that propelled 12 Americans to the moon. You call that being involved in space flight on a "superficial" or "intermittent" basis?

You're disregarding that his primary responsibility the first 15 years he was in the US was military rockets. Spaceflight during that time was not his main focus. That's the point, as clearly noted already. You may not have picked up on the oft mentioned change in jobscope.
Regardless, ole Werner was a bright fellow. He did a lot for us. Too bad he was such a POS in his previous job.

Yeah, no...

Von Braun was good, but he stood on the shoulders of Goddard, Tsiolkovsky and Oberth who are the true "fathers" of spaceflight.

Von Braun and Korolev would have been amateurs dabbling in the field if it wasn't for the work done before them by the ones I listed.

And for the record, Korolev was actually the better rocket designer than Von Braun. Our that could be debated.

President Joe Biden nominated Su in February to replace former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, who left his post to lead the National Hockey League Players Association.
