Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Why is this thread even up? Rick Barnes isn’t gonna get fired and shouldn’t even be a real discussion.
The purpose of a message board is for discussion. It emciuld be a discussion of a unicorn playing center next year which also won’t happen, but people can discuss it if they wish. Because it’s a message board.

I felt we were gonna lose when we didn’t stretch the lead in the first half. 2 or 3 shots went in and out. Several point blank misses. Ugh.
same here, I said that in the 1st half. Kept letting them hang around. I have never seen 1 team that had so many scoring droughts like this team had all year

My problem with him is he seemed to take the "goon" thing to heart way too much; like right into the game he was trying to be the intimidating dude and it's like....just play man. I don't think anyone is actually afraid of him.

He averages 6/4, of course no one is afraid of him. He lost his temper, threw a tantrum and cost his team possession and 3 points because he’s, to be frank, a moron. How important would those 3 points have been late?

So will we need to wait until Barnes misses the tournament? Better to move on a year or two early than a year or two late. He has coached forever and has made 1 final 4. It’s not like he’s Tom Izzo or Coach K. I appreciate what Barnes has done overall, but he’s been here for awhile now. It’s time to move on
Tenn is in a great position to where the wheels aren't going to just fall off the program if Barnes has a couple of down years and is then let go. No sense in gambling on someone just because he can't get out of the sweet 16

I dont blame him in the least for grabbing whats likely a last big money contract.

The only problem I had at the time was his saying he would be at UCLA if they would have covered the buy out. Being candid is fine to a point but that's one data point that didn't need to be made public.

Barnes stabilized this program when it needed it badly but this program gave him some stability as well coming off his tenure at Texas. Also got him closer to his family in NC.

Its overall been a win-win situation but it does get frustrating hitting the ceiling every year and what makes it worse is consistently losing to the lower seeds.

Just is what it is at this point.

He’s a coach, not a Pr expert on how to handle media…

The price to keep Barnes from going to UCLA kept Tennessee relevant and trending upward.

Considering Fulmer, who I love, was AD at the time, I have little faith that team could have executed a basketball coaching search that would have upgraded the coaching staff had Barnes bolted…. The price to pay him to stay was more important than balking and going into a search that likely results in us saving money and paying a coach less.

Rick Barnes is the basketball version of Mark Richt.
As much as I hate this thread, that point may well be true. But I even if that’s the case, there are a lot worse places the program could be than to have a coach like that.

It was insane. Kinda had to expect a loss tonight or Saturday. The droughts are just horrendous.

Not a single player was on tonight, and that isn’t the first time that has happened this year.

You don’t fire Barnes and his buyout unless a clear upgrade is there. You sure as hell don’t fire Barnes and his buyout just to hire a mid major coach for a cheaper price because “they aren’t Barnes”

Peterson was a moron coach, but he didn’t leave the roster in shambles like Cuonzo/Donnie did while cusp of a scandal….

Pearl's roster only looked great because Pearl improved them vastly. He was starting a 6'2 PG at PF and developing a walk on into a great player. Pearl took a dead program that was heading right back into Wade Houston territory, and instantly made them into an NCAA team.

I don't know why people seek to downplay what he did here. Even if you now hate him, it's silly to act like he strolled into a good situation.

Dude, believe what you want. It’s not worth arguing about because Barnes is in absolutely no danger of losing his job.

Barnes, like Richt, is a great coach but there is just something about the postseason that bothers both of them. Like Richt, if we replace Barnes we better have a Kirby Smart type.

I mean… yeah. What’s that got to do with what I said?

Barnes inherited a down team in a program that had a 20 year period of moderate, mostly sustained success. It's not like he inherited a downtrodden program with limited success in prior 2 decades.

Pearl inherited a program with only a blip of success in past 25 years (under Green).

Both coaches should be commended but comparing the programs they inherited is apples to oranges

I love Pearl and hope winds favor him returning one day. But Pearl’s roster he walked into is nothing like the roster Barnes took over after Donnie was fired.

...and there will be other coaches who can be successful if you make the correct hire.

I don't want him fired, but acting like no one else can be successful is a little much.

I didn’t say no one else could be successful, but programs historically revert to the average. Fans are angry at Barnes for not doing something that literally NO other coach has ever done in the history of TN basketball. A history that spans 115 years. Think about that.
