Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

His FF was 20 years ago, he’s been to 1 sweet 16 in damn near 15 seasons… Texas fired him for this reason. I don’t know why I or anyone else should ever expect him to take the team to the next level here, cause he is what he is. The question is how much longer is he going to be here? I guess he’s the only one that will make that decision. I thank him for what he’s done. But the excitement for the tournament is definitely gone, cause we all know how this ends.
Sure… but you didn’t answer my question at all. There’s no one of Barnes’ pedigree that will ever come here again. You can feel how you want to about the tourney, but the excitement went out the door for most fans with ZZ’s injury, not anything to do with Barnes.

Your are rite Barnes could walk away today or get fired and some think a top tier coach would run to get here I don't think so Tennessee is a football first school and college basketball coaches know it. We all know how we have done with mid major coaches here

Your question isn’t relevant. Why would I care if a coaching candidate had a “fluky” ( I think it was you that called UNCs title game appearance this) final four appearance before most of the players on the roster were born? That would not be part of the search criteria.

You do realize the HC’s with better resumes than Barnes aren’t leaving their current jobs to come here right?

If you don’t care about a fluky F4 run then why is everyone in here so hung up about Pearl and all these other teams making a F4 when we haven’t? Seems like you’d be perfectly content with the last few years. If not, I ask again: what coach that has made even a “fluky” final four is going to coach here?

You can’t simultaneously say Barnes has no pedigree bc his F4 appearance was a fluke and then complain that we don’t have even a fluke F4 in the next breathe. That makes you a… hippo

What is the search criteria in your opinion, and who are your preferred candidates?

It’s been a struggle when the 3s aren’t going in.

See… this honest assessment stuff is easy. You don’t even have to pick a side.

Felt that way going into the tournament last year. My cousin is a huge Michigan fan - so we went back and forth before the game, all in fun. Told him he had no chance to win if we hit our threes, but a real good one if we didn't. We didn't - and he wrote me back saying something like - 'yeah, I see what you were saying'. Last year no half court offense when the 3s weren't dropping and I didn't see much of it this year - though I watched less as I felt I knew what was coming. At this point Barnes has under-achieved for me. If he's in the top 8, he never makes the elite 8, if above 16, doesn't make the sweet 16, if he's in the top 20 - he might well lose in the first round. He has way more talent than that.

To use a football analogy - he's a defensive coach/guru. Might not even play a player if he's not pulling his weight defensively. Not saying that's bad but it is defensively focused. Offense is run around until you can get a good/marginal look at 3 or heave it at the buzzer. Zero half-court offense inside the arc. In football, coaches try to hire another OC - Barnes needs an OC.....he's, not, it. But he needs it, said so last year. Someone has to step up and help him out - to get the hell out of his own way. I'm all for Barnes sticking around, but he just doesn't seem willing to recognize that he might be his own worst problem.

All that said. You get hot tomorrow, and stay that way, TN can do real damage in the tourney. What do they have to lose - just go play, that is all that's left.

I said nothing about a final 4, that was you. And also why do y’all constantly bring up Pearl? Obsessed much?

As a program with 0 Final Fours to its name, we really can’t gauge a coach’s success based on how many FF’s he takes us to. Obviously some disagree, but it’s just a bit illogical for us to consider a coach a failure for not taking us to a FF when we’ve never been to one. I mean, we’ve frequently gone home in the first weekend of the tournament even before Barnes.

Literally no one has said he’s a failure because no final 4 here.

The Rick Barnes Seasons are like listening to country songs… somebody else is always to blame for the heartache; they’re all the same length; and the people that love ‘em won’t stand for criticism of any kind

Ive said im not going to blame Barnes for the finish of this team, and I stand by that. However I think DW and RB need to have a serious conversation this off season. If Barnes isnt going to play this new NIL and portal game. Then he needs to get out. DW needs to tell RB finish top 3 in conference reg season next year or make a run in the tournament. If hes not going to play ball then its time to open the door and push him out.

Pushing Barnes out would be idiotic.
