Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Barnes' old-school offense doesn't work well in today's basketball world. It's nice to coach great defense, but your offense has to keep pace as well.
I'm not saying White should fire him, but UT is paying Final Four money to a coach who no one expects to ever make the Final Four (or even come within sniffing distance). Firing Rick after the Vols flop in the upcoming Big Dance might not look good to some, but encouraging him to retire and rest on his laurels might be in order (Barnes is getting quite long in the tooth and has a storied career to his credit). Danny White has a history of hiring championship-level coaches, so I'm sure he wouldn't let down the Vol faithful on the basketball front should a regime change come to pass.

I'm not here to say Pearl is better than Barnes, but the thing people do not mention is the fact Pearl walked into a dumpster fire at Auburn as well.
People predicted he would fall on his face.
Coming in off a three year show cause, recruiting with that hanging around his neck.
He's done a fine job there.

Auburn doesn’t give a sh*t if you cheat

Pearl was made for that job.

Tennessee is more so paying to make sure Tennessee never returns to the black curtains and questionable coaches. Barnes is worth every penny for the job he has done which was primarily saving the program and stabilizing before he retires. At end of the day, there is no downside to him making this amount of money. He’ll never be fired where we have to worry about a buyout impacting the next hire given he’s 2-3 seasons away from retirement.

The Hangup of Barnes pay by some is hilarious. Either y’all are naive and don’t remember the Cuonzo/Tyndall seasons or you’re just a grump. There is literally nothing wrong with Barnes making what he makes. Literally no one who’s actually involved with the AD and Basketball program are second guessing Barnes’ compensation. But the “internet warriors” are acting like he’s some 40 year old coach with a whole 20-30 years ahead of him making the most money in the country
Tennessee going into a coaching search with 5-6 million on a coach being the norm for our AD with a stable program and recruiting pipeline, Tennessee is in great shape. If you told me we squeezed more than 6 seasons out of Barnes when we hired him, I would have said HELL YES…. I’m very happy to be having this status conversations compared to where we were every off-season with Cuonzo and the post firing of Tyndall.

It's quite obvious when you look around the country at the consistently FF and E8 teams, no one cares.
You a baseball fan? Did Tony V cheat?

Pearl cheated here and was punished for it.

Tennessee is one of the few basketball programs right now that constantly isn’t under NCAA Investigation.

You can say what you want about Barnes track record in the NCAA Tournament but he’s brought stability to the program and has made us respectfully relevant without bending the rules.

And whoever replaces Barnes, I’m sure won’t be a complete scum bag under Danny White.

The theme of this thread -

Vols lose - posters attack Barnes
Vols win - posters attack the posters who attacked Barnes

Either way , there's nothing different from the first page until the last. Just blah, blah, blah
I think it’s more the absurdity of the comments and the continuous non-stop diatribe.

Barnes didn’t build sh—. That was done under Pearl and still held together until Barnes arrived.

Amazing the lengths some of you sheep will go to to salivate over a guythat Texas fired and hasn’t been beyond the Sweet Sixteen in 14 friggin’ years. “We can’t do better”😂

What a joke.

Lol what? That's seriously one of the dumbest things I've seen yet. Almost everything Pearl had built had been been burned, and Pearl started the fire.

Yes, and this is why I wanted Pearl to go anywhere except in the SEC becaues I knew it would be a constant pining for Pearl or at least some sort of weird revisionist history about his time here. The truth of what happened while Pearl was here, because I witnessed it, was before that somewhat miracle E8 run the fanbase was starting to grumble hard about how Pearl couldn't get it done in March. There was PLENTY of talk of how he was a good regular season coach but didn't win when it mattered (sound familiar?). Evidenced by perhaps the greatest UT team in history getting spanked in the S16. And the next year we had a SECT Championship presented to us on a silver platter and we choked. And we went into the E8 being destroyed in the SECT by UK and nobody saw that E8 run coming. Up until that run, the grumblings about Pearl were getting louder.

Then he gets fired and basically becomes this martyr myth where a portion of the fanbase believes if he had stayed we'd be enjoying F4s and National Championships and I chuckle at that. What I actually believe is had Pearl never gotten in trouble and stayed and never got to the E8 again we'd be having the same discussion about how we're paying a crap ton amount of money for early March exits.

You fire a HOF coach who's making the dance consistently and I'd question the sanity of anyone who'd consider the job.

You’re right. There are those always pining for the next coach and the next player. The seniors on this team, a team that has never fallen out of the weekly AP polls, are called garbage every time they have a below average game. JJJ, SV, Uros, ON, and Key have all been trashed relentlessly by clueless posters every game.

Pearl had a really nice resume at TN before he started another dumpster fire. Elite 8. Outright SEC regular season championship. Number 1 AP ranking. 6x NCAAT invitations. Kicking Florida’s ass when they were winning back-to-back national championships. Unfortunately his methods were extremely flawed. And there were major choke jobs. And Kentucky was his Daddy.

No doubt though that the usual grumps would have been calling for a new coach even had the NCAA crap not happened. They are after all the Legions of the Miserable.

Cheating does not exist anymore in NCAA sports.....Pearl can do whatever he wants and get away with it now.

Now that players can be bought, that only removes one form of cheating. Academic fraud and failed drug tests are still on the table. So is tampering with players on other rosters. Bruce isn’t about to find Jesus and stay out of the gray areas.

Also he is Jewish so I doubt he believes in Jesus

People also forget that in Pearl’s final season, Tony Jones had a better record in SEC play as acting head coach (5-3) than Pearl did (3-5). I remember some fans on Facebook (back when it was cool) suggesting Pearl had lost his touch and a change was needed.

People also forget that in Pearl's in his 8th full year at Auburn and has gotten out of the first weekend of the Dance exactly once. (I'm obviously giving him a pass for the Covid year, he's actually in his 9th season there.). People also forget some of the humiliating defeats suffered by Pearl while coaching UT, such as getting boatraced by Michigan in his final game in the first round of the Dance, blowing a 20 point lead to Greg Oden and tOSU, getting taken to coaching school by Rick Pitino and his Louisville team in 2007-2008 with probably Pearl's most talented team overall (that was the team that beat Memphis, got to #1, had Lofton, JaJuan Smith, Chism, Ramar Smith, Tyler Smith).

It's funny when people call other teams cheaters. We've been cheating as much as anyone the last few years. Pearl, Pruitt, and now our loose cannon baseball coach. Just a matter of time on that ticking time bomb. If you ain't cheating, you ain't trying.

There’s cheating and then there’s Bama and Barn level of cheating. There’s also the untouchable Blue Blood cheating. Like Roy’s fake academic program.

You are conveniently picking a coaches last game which is always a loss unless your a blue blood. He got us to the Sweet 16 or better three times in six years. But, yes, like Barnes and everybody else that ever coached here he lost the last game he coached every year.
