Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Were they not supposed to beat UCLA and Gonzaga this year? Both were not ranked at the time.
beginning of the year ranking really mean nothing. it’s based off heresay, the results from last year, and who you brought in. it has nothing to do with the current seasons games. ranking wise at that time we were better, but obviously now that we’re into the season we see that those teams deserved to be ranked and probably higher than the lady vols. so no, i dont think those were for sure wins.

Gee, here we go again... Kara Lawson will never be the coach at Tennessee (not that she'd want to) after the kerfuffles she caused on the BOT. Walz will also never be the coach, either, because of some of the shenanigans he's been involved in the past. He played the Louisville AD, the media, and apparently many of you, by putting out a false story about Tennessee's interest in him.

There was a search for other 'name' coaches and none of them would return our calls. Kellie's run into the Sweet 16 at Mo. St. (While beating Bama to get there) was all that was needed to get the attention of the UTAD.

I still believe she's the coach we need. It takes years of recruiting to get us back where we can be consistent winners. She's got some future talent lined up, but getting the top players consistently will take a bigger NIL purse than we currently have. UConn, South Carolina and LSU are buying players from the high school ranks and the portal that we have competed for.

All of you pitchfork carrying posters calling for her job better be careful of what you wish for - it could be worse. Remember what the football team went through in the last decade.

Nobody is pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Let's support the coaches we have (recruits read social media) and if you really want to help, put your money where your mouth is and donate to the Lady Vol Boost-her Club.
Tennessee has a plethora of alums with millionaire status. Time for those who can, to ante up. U Conn rides the ESPN bus and it’s hard to believe SC has more money than Tennessee. Kellie just needs to realize she needs some more horses before she does that killer pre SEC schedule again. She had too many new additions she needed to work with on this team.

Somebody asserted above that "it takes years of recruiting to get back to where we can be winners"

That is complete and utter nonsense. Indeed, basketball is the easiest sport in which good recruiters/coaches
can get winning results, because it is only a five player sport. We're being out-recruited by programs that have
zero pedigree, so, again, it's nonsense. The fact is, our recruiting has been lousy and our coaching is mediocre. That's
what I see and have seen.

Even saying that, we've got two of the top players in the women's game right now, plus a decent (but admittedly
not great) supporting cast. Yet we haven't beaten any good opponent all year.

In my experience on the Exposure circuit and from what I have seen in NCAA trends
about 90% of recruits follow coaches and about 10% follow programs

CPS always kept the toughest schedules and I'm guessing CKH is copycatting the same regimen but the only problem is ......
She doesn't have a Holdclaw, Catchings , Parker or even a Kellie.

No.. she has a Jackson a Horston and a Walker
And you're comparing them to my list. Coach please. Let flip it this way , if Pat had Jackson , Horston , and Walker they would be final four and NPOTY and all other award.
Now if Kellie had Holdclaw, Catching, Parker and
herself would we make the sweet sixteen ?

No.. she has a Jackson a Horston and a Walker
Horston #2 was ranked below Parker #1 coming out and Kellie's still struggling to ....never mind.
Kellie don't know what to do with elite players.
I wonder what if she got Angel Reese and Kim got Rickea Jackson ? Think about it.

Our coach has been on the recruiting trail for 20+ years. How many years does it take?

imo I think she isn’t resonating with the parents of the recruits and they are telling their child “look I’m not saying you shouldn’t commit to Tn but I think you should really give some other schools a harder look”

ELite players and parents of elite players choose coaches/programs,,, not schools

Only once in a blue moon to you get an elite player like Della Donn (Delaware) or Caitlin CLark (Iowa),,,that chooses a school over a program/coach.

Which kids today connect with. Her social media presence/practice talks early helped market her to recruits and paid off. I’m not endorsing Kara but she has made a nice transition in a short time.

AND she just beat Notre Dame......be nice if WE could win a game like that

AND now she has that "Handle Hard Better" thing going....I see that speech EVERYWHERE. Heck our company used it in a sales meeting!

This team could improve next year if all of them would get in really good physical condition. They would be quicker, faster, and play better on both ends of the court. We have a bunch of good shooters but need to improve in their quickness. It is still possible to get some good replacements this Spring and Summer from the portal or high school . Don’t give up so easily.

If "ifs and buts were candy and nuts it'd be Christmas every day"

I said it when she first got there she utilized her practice speeches as recruiting opportunities and they blew up. Almost instant in recruiting. Kids recognize her from TV and now they see a powerful black female not named Coach Staley at an institution like Duke.

Working hard vs competing was the first video.

I wanted her when the job became open....people ON THIS SITE said I didn't know basketball (I only coached the women's game for 14 years and have spent time with Kara in person on multiple occasions but what do I know). Well who's looking smart today?

I am not sure why we are debating Kara because that shipped has sailed.

I am not convinced that Kara would have wanted the job. I think she wanted to be at a prestige school. Note, her parents did not want her to come to TN because it lacked academic status.

She was a high risk-high reward hire and the bet seems to be paying off for Duke but she does not have any NCAA results to show.

She’s in a good spot and I agree for her personality, Duke is a better fit. Off the record, she took History of Rock with me and about 500 others, not sure that was high academics her parents wanted

I heard she teaches the Study of Cinemagraphic Arts: Mel Brooks course…

History of rock was probably a great course. Rock music intersects with politics, culture, social struggles and conflicts, economics.
