President Joe Biden - Kamala Harris Administration

Who charges their mower battery in the winter?

Not me. My riding mower battery has been effectively dead for two years now - the mower isn't much older. I just put it on the charger when I use the push mower to mow around the periphery and under the trees, and then it's ready to go when I'm done. The trick is never turn off or stall the mower once it's running. I suppose in the next year of so I should replace it.

To be fair, Tennessee has short rolling blackouts right now. Its power grid hasn't totally shut down over a massive swath of the state for several consecutive days.
That didn’t happen here either. Worst I heard was rolling blackouts and we actually never even had that. (Edit: not entirely true I do remember some plants south of DFW area that wouldn’t come back online after the short term shutdown. Forgot about those)

The main issue we had was gas wellheads freezing up and not being able to source fuel to all the natural gas fired plants. There is apparently a great deal of water vapor in the raw gas coming out of the ground to the point that it eventually froze up the well heads. The equipment worked fine largely we just didn’t have enough/steady fuel to the equipment. Additionally when that storm hit we had a great deal of equipment down for their scheduled yearly maintenance. A perfect storm if you will. They cut maintenance short and brought a good deal of that equipment back online.

Seen several posts from buddies on FB showing the state getting the message out that our grid is working fine. They’re wearing us out with that messaging 😂

True, but I’ll have enough 12VDC “toys” in the basement garage and enough extension cords. The tankless doesn’t take much power. I’m surprised for the price an internal battery backup isn’t included or an option

That sure would make sense, and probably would have sold me. Maybe by the time my current water heater dies, manufacturers will have figured that an integrated battery backup makes sense - it's not rocket science. We had a tankless water heater in a house we rented on Okinawa in the 60s and it didn't need electric power to function - sometimes you wonder if progress is progress. Really all you need is a flow switch and a pilot light to make it work - the flow switch opens the gas line when the water starts flowing - crude but effective.

BREAKING: MLGW is preparing for yet another round of rolling blackouts tonight.

Rolling blackouts reinstituted, thousands of MLGW customers without power

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) is preparing for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to re-issue Step 50 Curtailment.

This means that once again, MLGW could have to institute system-wide “rolling blackouts.” Residents are also being asked to limit water usage due to low water pressure in some areas.

As early as 6 p.m., service to areas could be interrupted for 30 minutes, the utility company says.

When ordered, temporary outages will begin in the areas of North of Downtown, vicinity of Ben Hooks Library, and North Germantown. If necessary, the next areas affected will be areas near Central Gardens/Midtown, Getwell & 240, South Germantown/Winchester and East Germantown/West Collierville. As needed, we will rotate in 30-minute intervals throughout the rest of the service area. As soon as the Step 50 order is recalled, MLGW will notify customers and restore power.

#UPDATE: MLGW said as of 5:50 p.m. Friday, the extreme cold has caused a "critical power supply situation and low water pressure."

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Light, Gas and Water said it is preparing for the possibility of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) again requiring rolling blackouts as the extreme cold causes a "critical power supply situation and low water pressure."
Rolling blackouts means service to an area will be interrupted for 30 minutes. Customers may experience outages two to three times a day on average. All customers in MLGW’s service territory could be affected.

Critical facilities such as water pumping stations, sewage treatment plants, hospitals and airports are excluded from the blackouts.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) has activated to a Level 3-State of Emergency as an arctic blast takes hold of the state.

TEMA's designation means "a serious emergency or minor disaster has occurred or a situation is deteriorating rapidly and public warnings are being issued."

As a result, key state departments are called to the States's Emergency Operations Center to respond to situations.

The activation comes as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) called on local power companies to conduct rolling blackouts in an effort to avoid major outages. The call to action was lifted just before noon but will be monitored in case consumption reaches critical levels.

No joke all this has done is reinforce that I need a little cabin on top of a mountain with a nice wood stove and some solar panels.

I've always wondered about one of the APUs that airline sized planes use for home use. They are small turbines coupled to a generator. One of those for when the sun doesn't shine, some solar panels, and backup batteries if they ever become really practical seem like quite a package. A few companies offer what amounts to barely portable battery backup and folding solar panels that supposedly can charge it when the power is out ... and the sun is shining. I think I recall the solar panels don't charge the backup very quickly though.

Send the yankees and Californians back home. Seriously there needs to be planning to support growth before growth takes place, and it seems that it never happens. I've never figured out exactly what it is that Planning Commissions actually do - whatever it is doesn't work. You need the infrastructure in place to accommodate growth - not play catch up after growth takes place. Doesn't matter if it's roads, schools, utilities, there's no excuse for getting caught with your pants down, and that's especially true when places actually recruit and offer incentives to new companies.

Something like an APU would be great, but APU's themselves are really pricey, and they're complex pieces of equipment to use at home. If you managed to get one that wasn't certified airworthy for a good price, spare parts would be the next problem. Maybe a small GPU would be more practical, but I don't know what's available for home use.

What Biden, Pelosi and Harris just did with the Ukrainian cross dresser should be enough to kick them all out of office immediately. You people who voted for that trash should be ashamed of yourselves.

Typical of a Republiar, trying to hide that he's lying. Congratulation on failing to even do that. Well, nice, I suppose, to know something never change. Liars gonna lie, even they themselves might not know why, but they'll do it anyway. Just congratulate them for being consistent if nothing else.

I would think the maintenance and operating costs would make them pretty prohibitive

Maybe we should go into the tankless water heater business 🤷🏻‍♂️
