Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

I don't really want to pick many bones in this recruiting fight, as I feel everything's pretty obvious and has been for a while now, but I don't think I agree that there weren't coaches to be got. Tennessee just wasn't interested in either seeking a change or having to pay commensurate the costs associated with such a change. And to be fair to the department, most schools wouldn't and won't. These programs already have enough costs to address as it is; they don't want to incur any expenses for women's basketball unless they absolutely have to. Or at least, that's how it seems. They'll make moves when contracts are up, sure, but unless you hold a hot poker to their feet they are not going to drop big money on this stuff. Someone might argue that UConn would, but I suspect we'll learn they're no different once Auriemma retires. It's just how this sport is.
we fuss about losing in state recruits....what about in state coaches?
Wouldn't we hate to see Coach K become great in another state's university?

Not that it matters much on a board dedicated to sports, but there's a difference between grammar and orthography. Typos, misspellings, both intentional and inadvertent, have naught to do with grammar.

Well played. I knew as soon as I hit post someone would call me out on it. I also knew he would NOT be the one to do it...

Was she great before she arrived? 20 year veteran getting the first job pass.

Classy sending our a post you knew was bogus just to get at a poster. That’s what trolls do. Typical of you. Either that or you lied to save face. Either way…..Hahahahaha.

Where in the heck do you get first year pass? Last year she got to The nm sweet sixteen with our best player out and our second best player at about 70%. She then brought more talent into our program than anyone else in the country.
And yet, a couple of folks on here dog her day and night because their feeling are all hurt that UT didn’t hire their preferred candidate.
Let me know when that pass kicks in.

First job, not first year.

I was not here during the process so my feelings are indifferent. My thought was then was that we went safe and hopeful. Not proven route.

This board is degenerating into Vol-acrimony-Nation.

I hoped the Negavoling would have gone on temporary hiatus during this game break since it followed after a win but the forces of darkness and dissent rest not.

Anyway, I hope all had a great Thanksgiving and are transitioning into a wonderful Holiday period.

I would not argue that preference was given to a LVFL. But, I also feel we’ve got someone who is going to get the job done.
Hope I’m right and you are wrong!!😆😆😆

No way, you've got to give it to pusillanimous. He worked really hard for that one...

Nice job working it into your daily routine.

I was a Holly supporter to the very end. I am not making that mistake again. I’ve seen enough. This is the worst Lady Vols team I have seen in my lifetime.
Then you missed very last team Pat Summitt coached. They were inconsistent and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament. This team will not. Hell, Look at the 96 team with 10 losses, many of them coming early on in the season. That didn't look like to good of a team either. We all know how that ended up turning out.

You're thinking of the 09 Baby Vols rebuilding team, the season after that great Candace Parker class that won back to back titles left. The last team Pat coached finished with a loss to Baylor in the Elite Eight in 2012.

Close, that was the 97 team. Unfortunately, while Kellie is currently on the sideline, she is out of player eligibility and Chamique ain't walking through that door...

You are correct about that 09 team. That was a hot mess.

Kellie is not doing any better than Holly did coaching the Lady Vols, and won't do any better in the coming years. In her first 4 years as head coach, Holly led the team to the elite 8 three times, and won the SEC Championship several times. Obviously not good enough for a Lady Vols team and fans. Kellie has led the team to 1 Sweet 16. Again, obviously not good enough except for Kellie loyalists, who will say for the next 10 years..."give her time."

I'm sure some will argue that Holly had more talented recruiting classes, but let's not forget Kellie inherited a team that included Key, Horston, Davis, and Burrell; granted, Key and Horston were freshwomen (sic :)) at the time. Now in their 4th year playing together, you wouldn't know it just by watching a game, AND some players (not calling names) don't appear to play any better than they did when they were frosh.

Top recruits have not and will not associate Kellie Harper's name with winning, as they didn't Holly Warlick, so there goes recruiting. Regardless of how good/great a coach is, if you can't recruit top talent, get used to ordinary performances and seasons.

Until decisions are made in a higher office regarding whether LVBB will ever be restored to its former perennial powerhouse status, get used to being excited to see the LV win a few games against ranked opponents, and lose many games you wouldn't expect them to lose.

Lastly, there's nothing about Kellie's 58% win record as a head coach for15 years before taking over at UT, that suggests she was the right person to lead the LV program. Oh, unless just making it to the NCAA tournament is the ultimate goal.
