President Joe Biden - Kamala Harris Administration

It's worse than I thought. Our commercial maritime fleet is puny less than 200 ocean going vessels and only about 6000 mariners.

Dwindling U.S. Merchant Fleet Is A Crisis Waiting To Happen
I bet if we quit defending every Tom, Dick and Harry shipping company around the world that are owned by American companies, but flagged everywhere but the US, they might change their tune where they flag their ships.

I don't disagree with that but the Jones Act and our strict regulations needs to go also.

Arent most of em Panamanian registrations or Korean?
Our ship building industry is a disaster. Just another heavy industry sellout
I think our ship builders are in great shape, they just don't have to be competitive because all they do anymore is build ships for the US Navy. Anything done for the government doesn't need to be cost effective, it just needs to cost a lot.

So you want Chinese and Arab ships to transport energy from the gulf to the northeast? What happens when they give the big FU sign and say move it yourself US?

I want our US flagged fleet to be able to compete with foreign carriers. Why shouldn't a US company be able to by a ship built in Japan, crew it with Indonesians and have a US Captain?

Not sure about that. Our Naval shipyards are a disaster and need a serious modernization. Ingall's, Bath and NG seem ok, but are struggling to build the 3 subs per year, carriers, replacement SSBN, etc.

“In 2018, the Navy estimated that it would need $4 billion to modernize its 17 dry docks,” GAO said. “However, the Navy reports that the cost of just the first three dry dock projects has grown by over $4 billion. This is on top of costs not included in the initial SIOP estimate — such as inflation, utilities, environmental remediation, and historical preservation — which could add billions.”

Dry docks and maintenance.

Isn't that what they usually do, except for the where it's flagged part?

Maybe the yankees that love the democrat type policies should change the law then? Oh wait, they could have while they are in power, but they didn't. Let em freeze.

It was passed by an R congress and signed by an R President. Neither party has tried to repeal it since.

It really doesn't matter who it was passed by because it's a 100 year old law. If the liberal blue north was so upset with the law, they could have easily repealed it for their own good. I'm all for the north easterners to pay their fair share for the choices they make in elections. Biden could fix this with the stroke of a pen, but he won't because he's a dick, and he doesn't care one iota about any American.

The Jones Act probably had some kind of logic going for it in 1920 ... maybe. Laws need to be reviewed from time to time - something that never seems to happen.
Not really it was just basic protectionism. Of course this was the time we were transitioning from an isolationist country into a more participating member of the global fuster cluck

Trump waived the Jones Act in 2017 to get supplies to Puerto Rico after the hurricane. I guess you could say that's proof that Trump cared more about the country than biden and the dems.

Neil Bortz gave an excellent summary of a union dispute at an appliance factory back many decades ago. Time after time after time...degradation of our industrial base.
I miss that guy.

Probably, but perhaps the reasoning was also to spur development of US shipping and that was a way of doing it. It's not really unique in many ways. Whether it's all or most, countries generally prohibit foreign airlines from conducting domestic flights.

I remember when I was a kid somewhere around 13 and listening to my dad and one of his friends talking. Dad's friend worked at some factory and the union was threatening to strike. He was telling my dad they had agreed to everything but the company wouldn't compromise on new hire wages and told the union if they strike they would close the plant. The union walked out and the plant closed. That has always stuck with me.
