Heard back from guy but don’t have a lot of details:

There was a confrontation between Hooker and Banks….. Milton helped break it up but didn’t punch anyone…. Interesting story from last year….. Banks got into it with a trainer and picked him up in the air and pinned him against the wall before it was broken up.

Banks has some real internal issues then. Hate that I've been rooting so hard for somebody who's seemingly a really sh*tty person.

You'd think after his arrest and being awarded a second chance he would have changed but apparently not.

I avoided Volnation yesterday. My heart just couldn’t take it. Every one of us would have taken 9-2 at this point with a win over Bama before the season, but to lose with what all was at stake to USCjr was devastating. Not that we lost 35-31 type game, but we just got embarrassed. I’ve turned the page. It’s been a great season. I’m afraid next year won’t be as magical, but at least I feel like we are still capable of being great again. Beat Vandy. Recruit like heck and work the portal. Hopefully finish in the top 8. Probably have some coaching changes. Coach them up for next season.

Go Vols!

Ah my friend, we could be better next year. Milton will have 2 full years going in to learning the system and learning how to be a better QB. We will have some young but better athletes on the Defensive side of the ball and some young studs on the Offense as well. We could surprise the all knowing sports folks again. It will not be easy but we can do it.

Nobody had us picked to be where we are now and nobody(outside Volnation) will have us picked to be as good next year, that's GREAT !!!! Lets see what changes come on the defensive side of the ball as far as coaching and if we rate in the top third in the nation on D and top Ten on offense we will be hard to handle by anybodies standards.

Saturday stung, no way around it but with that being said we have not been in the position to get let down in a great while. It was ugly to say the least but maybe, just maybe that will give them a new sense of urgency as well as a desire to never let that happen again. This is the time we will find out if the players really believe in what they are doing or is it just lip service....I think they believe and will just want to prove to everybody else in the SEC we had a hiccup and not a collapse moving forward.

I really think this is the beginning of a VOLS era we will all be proud of !!!! GO VOLS!!!!

First 10 minutes of this is very sobering.

Sad for Hooker. He won't get to do the bowl season fun stuff with the team. Won't get to go out on his own terms. Won't get to see what his TRUE draft stock was.

Think Vanderbilt is a dangerous game now. Wondering what the team's motivation will be now, if they can get up.

They're trying to figure out if we go to Sugar, Orange, or Cotton. What our pecking order is for bowls now.

We are slated to be in the Cotton Bowl vs Cincinnati or other G5 team (UCF, Tulane)

A good performance Saturday won’t erase the damage from last weekend, but it could redirect momentum heading into ESD and the offseason.

This is a WAY bigger game for us than it has any right to be.
It's been a long, long time since we've gotten 10 wins in a season. Glad to be in position to do it against Vandy.

So pulled some numbers...

Best passing defenses that also face 30 or more passing attempts a game.

Michigan 30.4 attempts 53.6% 161.7 passing yards 0.6 TDs allowed
Iowa 31.9 attempts 57.8% 164.4 passing yards 0.9 TDs allowed
Illinois 30.8 attempts 49% 165.3 passing yards 0.7 TDs allowed
Cincinnati 31.5 attempts 54.6% 188.6 passing yards 1.2 TDs allowed
Georgia 33.3 attempts 56.3% 189 passing yards 0.6 TDs allowed
Tulane 30.6 attempts 61.1% 189.5 passing yards 1.5 TDs allowed
Rutgers 30.5 attempts 58.3% 191.2 passing yards 1.3 TDs allowed
UAB 30.5 attempts 57.4% 193.2 passing yards 1.2 TDs allowed
Marshall 33.1 attempts 51.1% 195 passing yards 1 TDs allowed
Alabama 34.2 attempts 55.6% 195.9 passing yards 1 TDs allowed

Obviously you'd probably want to look at how good the passing offense they've face are as well. But that's an interesting list.

Tennesse 40.5 attempts 63.9% 303.4 passing yards 1.9 TDs allowed.

But the team I'd look at, or the DC at least I'd look at...is Oregon State.

Oregon State 36 attempts 57.1% 219.3 passing yards 0.8 TDs allowed

That's the highest attempts with the lowest completion %, passing yards, and TDs allowed. Also interesting that their DC Trent Bray is a 1st time DC and was their former LB coach. (maybe we just need to promote BJM?) They only gave up 300 or more passing yards twice all season. 345 to Washington State (who threw it 54 times to get there) and 360 passing yards to Fresno State (who threw it 46 times) neither of those teams though had more than 1 TD pass on them.

28th in points allowed (20.3)
25th in completion % allowed (57.1%)
60th in passing yards allowed (219.3)
7th in passing TDs allowed (0.8)
25th in total yards allowed (330.6)

They are similar to us offensively as well (except for the tempo) they pass it about 26 times a game and run it 40 times a game. We're at 34 passes and 41 rushes a game.

I’ve been giving Banks the benefit of the doubt all year long. Until last night.

I was looking for any type of improvement from our DBs from the beginning of the year. Nope. They have regressed. That’s primarily on Martinez. Making the same mistakes over and over again.

No significant change up in scheme or coverages or adjustments all year? That’s on Banks. Our Lbs and safeties look lost in coverage as well not just the Cbs.

Heupel needs to break the bank and go after Ryan Walters (Illini DC). He is a rising star and stud recruiter.
I am with you...I was not really happy with them, but they HAD shown quantifiable improvement in statistics except for passing yardage...but then that absolute abomination of a game plan. I can't let that nightmarish game go...they both (Banks and Martinez) need to gtfo or make MASSIVE visible and measurable improvement...now.

I think they are going to cost us another game Saturday if they don't.

I realize that SC had nothing to lose and with their RBs out they pretty much just threw their whole offense thatnwas on film out and threw a whole lot of new stuff at Banks...but how in the hell do you not see that coming and prepare for it?

If any of these portal guys we've brought in turn the corner so to speak we should see a pretty big improvement in next year's secondary (assuming the good talent doesn't portal out and we keep the 2023 class in tact).

Brandon Turnage - 102nd rated player in his class, 13th at CB and the 8th best player in MS - 4* 0.9548 composite
Kamal Hadden - 2746th rated player in his class, 275th at CB and the 81st best player in MI - 2* 0.7953 composite
Andre Turrentine - 169th rated player in his class, 21st at CB and the 6th best player in TN - 4* 0.9269 composite
Wesley Walker - 588th rated player in his class, 83rd at CB and the 30th best player in TN - 3* 0.8750 composite

So what you'd like to see is Turrentine and Turnage play to their HS ratings more going into this next season. Walker has shown flashes, but he's also moved to Safety so he's behind some upperclassmen who honestly are probably just holding on to their spots outta respect for them grinding it out this long. (Tank & Flowers)

So next year Heupel needs to tell Banks/Willie (assuming both stay) that the best guys need to play period. And open the entire secondary competition up at every spot
I don't think it's out of respect. . . at least for McCullough. If that was the case they would've benched him with the off-field stuff. We just dont have anyone better right now.

I think we may be misinterpreting the Banks issue. It's more than possible that Banks had some incidents and got left at home but that it didn't tear up the team in any classical sense. It's just that our defense is so bad that not having our star MLB out there wrecks our already shaky defense. Banks cleans up safety play all the time because our guys aren't there. He's a key in our blitzes and does a ton of tackling.

IOW, he doesn't have to be a locker room cancer in any of this. It could just be a kid that screwed up and got punished like any other kid would but his absence exposed an already awful defense.

This! Spot on and the most likely explanation.

Now that I can agree with. What an abomination.

Borderline conspiracy territory. How was no one even talking about that?
You gotta give Heupel credit...he is not in the excuse making business. I don't think I have ever seen another coach like him in that way. I kind of like that he is that way, but really I wish he would go Bret Bielema on fishy stuff sometimes.

Question...did anybody notice the SC players slipping very much? I wonder if they knew it and wore different cleats because of it.
