Transfer portal discussion

Florida just dismissed their DE Cox, not sure if we’d make a run at him in the transfer portal. He started at Georgia then went to Florida, guess he could finish with us
He already announced that he was entering the NFL draft.

LT - Mincey, C - Mays, RG - Spraggins

I wouldn't be surprised to see us go hard after a transfer RT. I don't think we would go after two OL transfers (we may) so I'll say
LT - Mincey, LG - Lampley, C - Mays, RG - Spraggins, RT - Transfer
If that is 4 of the starting 5 then I say Addison Nichols will take that other spot. That is where my focus is right now because if we have a dependable line then like I have said before I don't think we take a step back on offense.

LT-Mincey LG-Nichols C-Mays RG-Spaginns RT-Crawford. Only inexperience is Nichols but not only is he talented staff loves him. Not a bad unit. If they can get a sure-fire starter from Portal especially at Tackle you take. I do know they are high on the Freshman I believe you will see them other than Nichols of course be backups over the upperclassmen returning. In CHRIST Alone

Depending on the development of Dayne Davis, we might even be able to move Crawford to LG. He's a better run blocker than pass blocker and has looked really good this season. Davis has also looked good at T in his limited playing time, but more than held his own against LSU.

No doubt adds more depth. I do know the staff really likes Brian Grant as our future Tackle. He has NFL talent. He only played 2 years of football and was a basketball player so he came to Tennessee well under the radar but will one day make a big splash. Sham this year's OT Recruit. This staff wouldn't trade him for anyone has a great future at Tennessee. In CHRIST Alone

Super athletic guy. I think he'll be dominant once he adds more weight and muscle to his frame.

I'd count Wright as gone. Hyatt is likely to leave as well, but I'd say he's more likely than Wright to come back. I just don't know where all the open spots are going to come from, especially if guys like Harrison, Warren, Banks, Mitchell, etc. play their Covid cards. Keyton will almost certainly play his, since he'll be a starter next year. And I hope we have Harrison, Mitchell, Warren, and Banks play theirs because those guys returning would be better than anyone we'd get in the portal, given that they're already integrated into the system/culture.

Omari Thomas is also a definite possibility to leave early.
Hyatt is gone too. Kiper has him 13 on the big board and even though he might be an idiot it’s hard to argue his assessment on him and after him seeing what happened with Tillman I think he knows it’s in his best interest long term to declare

Based on my quick scroll through the roster here is what I see. These are the RS Srs listed on the roster. Some are guys that obviously don't play, I can't say whether which ones are or are not on scholarship.

No more eligibility:
Frerking (WR)
Hooker (QB)
Bumphus (DL)
Labruzza (DB)
Humphrey (LB)
Page (LB)
McGrath (K)
Smith (DL)
Fant (TE)

1 More year possible:
Tillman (WR)
R. Edwards (DB)
Milton (QB)
J. Mitchell (LB)
Banks (LB)
Wilson (K)
Lane (OL)
Warren (TE)
Lewis (DL)
Garland (DL)

There are obviously those with eligibility remaining that will look to test the draft process (Wright, Hyatt, etc). I expect a WR or 2 that are buried to test the portal. Currently we have 21 commitments. I don't see anybody past Tillman in the 1 more year that would try the NFL. That would make 10. Add in Wright and Hyatt makes 12. That means 9 more have to leave in order to make room just for the commits. Assuming we sign 25, that means 13. To add any from the portal means we have to add to the purge on top of that.
Byron Young is also a senior and likely NFL draft pick

Exactly what my concern is.

However our success will likely encourage some to enter the NFL draft. Like Jalin Hyatt, Bru McCoy, Byron Young, amoung others that decide to leave in the portal due to lack of playing time. We'll have plenty of room to add what we need.

You’re probably right. It’s not like coming back is going to increase his stock much if any. And there’s the injury risk. Squirrel will likely be the man there next year.

Hyatt is having an epic season and most all juniors should declare if they get a high draft projection. I really respect how Hyatt buckled down since last year and dedication himself to improving. I still have questions on whether he will be an elite pro. Seems like 90% of his splash plays he’s wide open and receivers aren’t wide open often in the nfl. Hyatt clearly has outstanding straight line speed which helps when CJH calls routes that confuses the secondary. I’m interested in how a slimmer guy can avoid being knocked off his routes and be able to battle nfl db’s on 50/50 balls. He’s made great strides at UT and no reason he can’t make more progress in the nfl, but he’s not the prototypical first round receiver. None of this is meant as negative as he has proven himself an outstanding college receiver and I’m a huge fan

Hyatt is listed at 6’0, 185

DeVanta Smith listed at 6’0, 170 currently

Depending on how many super seniors or draft eligible guys come back, that could affect whether we take many guys from the portal.

For example, if you get a guy like Roman Harrison to come back for his super senior year, that's better than getting a portal guy. You would be hard-pressed to find a portal Edge as good as RH and RH has the advantage of being familiar with the program.

In other words, if most or all or the guys who can come back for an extra year do come back, you may not see much, if any, portal takes, given the lack of roster room that would leave. And that's not a bad thing.

Seems like forever since he signed here. I met his family at one of the games. Super nice folks.
Not sure he really fits perfectly. LB body, but playing end on this defense.

He's basically the exact same size as Byron Young.

Back in in 1980s and before, Roman Harrison would have been one of the best defensive players in the country imo.

He's an athletic super aggressive....DT.
Except he's only 6'2 235 lbs.

Doesn't have the bend of a pass- rusher nor does he have the instincts of a LB.
He's just a tough physical athletic dude that wants to hit people. Edge is a good spot for him in the modern game.

I think Nichols will be at center when Mays leaves. He should be ready by then.

He was up to 244lbs before the season started. He tried to decapitate that tight end in the Kentucky game.
