Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes goes on trial for seditious conspiracy over January 6 riots - as attorneys argue that he and others in the far-right group Won't get a Fair Hearing in DC

Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes will go on trial next week for seditious conspiracy over the January 6 riots on the US Capitol, considered one of the most serious cases to emerge from the insurrection.

Jury selection began Tuesday and could take several days with the trial expected to last at least five weeks.

The case against Rhodes and his Oath Keeper associates is the biggest test yet for the Justice Department in its massive Jan. 6 prosecution and is being heard in federal court not far from the Capitol.

Seditious conspiracy can be difficult to prove, but conviction calls for up to 20 years behind bars. The last time someone pled guilty to seditious conspiracy was 30 years ago.

Attorney for Rhodes, a former U.S. Army paratrooper and a Yale Law School graduate from Granbury, Texas, and four other members of the violent mob, cannot get a fair hearing in Washington, DC.

Also on trial will be Thomas Caldwell, of Berryville, Virginia; Kenneth Harrelson, of Titusville, Florida; Jessica Watkins of Woodstock, Ohio, and Kelly Meggs of Dunnellon, Florida

Phillip Linder, an attorney for Rhodes, had urged that Judge Mehta disqualify a man who said he has a close family friend who works for a House member and recalled watching livestreamed video of the Capitol attack.

The judge called it a 'close call' but declined to disqualify the man who said he could set aside what he has heard about the Oath Keepers.

There certainly is a well-established link between Roger Stone and Donald Trump. Trump granted Roger Stone a pardon in December of 2020.

In Roger Stone's documentary, his calls for violence may not have been specific to a riot at the United States Capitol, or even to the date of January 6, 2021 ... but Stone clearly did view resorting to mob violence as one viable option towards helping Donald Trump retain the presidency.

I can just imagine what the response from Republicans would have been, if a peripheral figure to Barack Obama's 2012 Presidential Re-election Campaign (such as Howard Dean, maybe?) was on video saying the same things. The way Donald Trump and his followers dealt with losing the 2020 Presidential Election was despicable.
