Salman Rushdie stabbed and on a ventilator although at this point I think he's expected to live.*** Anne Heche dead. Rough week for celebs. I can't get poor Anne outta my head though. Burning is a legit phobia of mine and just the idea of anyone going through that bothers me so deeply. I can remember when we had to watch acid treatments for burn victims for a medical ethics class -- I have never gotten over it.

***If that name rings a bell but you can't quite place him, he's the one that wrote the Satanic Verses taking Iran to task and who they issued a Fatwa against. Several people associated with his book (publishers and the like) have been murdered over the years because of that Fatwa.

Interesting. Will add to the reading queue.

I have a strong feeling I would've pretended to be who he was trying to contact and arrange a place for us to "meet".
Gave PD The wife's account password, they said they have an officer who will catfish the stalker. They also said since this involves minors, the can reach out at federal agency that can pay him a visit. Still, should have gotten rid of that damn YouTube acct months ago. I was going to allow her to have a Supervised account.

Definitely. I encourage everyone to buy the book even if you never read it. Free speech is important and Rushdie has been hounded and hunted much of his life over one book. Kohmeini is the one who put out the Fatwa on him. (That should tell you how long he's lived with it).

They raised the bounty to like $3.3 million dollars several years back. I'm surprised more haven't tried to get him.

How old is your kid? I don't think it's wise to completely pull the plug online even though that feels good right now (and I'd prob be tempted to do that myself) as it won't actually do much to help or teach anyone how they should operate online and that really is something she is going to need to know. You can however take steps to make things a lot safer for everyone. I think you'd all be better served learning to practice good online safety habits and I would start with all new accounts for every member of the family as well as all new passwords (auto-generated is best).

It's easy to get online but not so easy to develop good online habits but your kid is going to grow up in an online world (it's unavoidable). Simply blocking social media or youtube is going to leave a kid even more vulnerable when they inevitably do get online (that's why I really do think it's better to teach safety than to try and forbid it). Teach her how to behave online and why and you will do far more to help prevent future problems.

If you're unsure about how best to protect your family online feel free to ask us or the PD (lot's of helpful and knowledgeable ppl here). People will point you in the right direction. It's a scary world - no doubt about that - but you will all feel so much better if you know better how to protect yourselves and your identities.

ETA: Do you run any kind of VPN or even just use private browsing? That's a really great first step.

I had no idea the bounty was that high. These people are deranged zealots though. They probably don't care that much about the money. They have a thousand self-righteous reasons on why they're fighting the good fight.

What is the name?

What is the name?

Salman Rushdie. The book is called The Satanic Verses. It's a novel that Ayatollah Khomeini deemed blasphemous against Islam. Khomeini put a fatwa (religious ruling) against Rushdie back in the 80s calling for his death. It's a wonder that Rushdie survived this long relatively unscathed. At least 3 people have been murdered over it (the translators for the Japanese and Italian versions and someone else but I can't remember which country/language). If you ever watch Top Chef, Rushdie was married to Padma Lakshmi for a time in the mid 2000s.

RF, my wife got delivery today. A box with all kinds of stalker-ish items. A journal. A letter with the sender's cell phone#. A song/poem titled in her name. Some south park socks. Some Chucks with names of the sender's favorite songs inked on them. The sender is from 1000+ miles away. A very sparse FB and LinkedIn account. Both track to the sender's address in the box. So we called the local PD. My 10yr old uses my wife's YouTube acct to post videos. Mostly of her pet dog and lizard. However her and her friend have posted a couple of videos if them doing gymnastic stretches. Just wondering how this dude could get my wife's name and our address from a YouTube acct? I checked the About tab. No email or location listed.
Random thought but is there any PII (personal identifying info) that is shown in the YT videos that someone could pause and get her name/address? People don’t think about when they take photos/videos of themselves at home and post but there may be a piece of paper on the counter, something hanging on the wall, etc. that has PII that someone could zoom in on and steal your info. Could be something as innocent as a framed college diploma. If there’s multiple items (cookie crumbs) then they could piece those together and get more (or bigger) info via a Google search. Probably not it but just a thought…

The definition of NOT A FOOTBALL SCHOOL

If Kentucky loses more than 4 games than they win this year their football program drops below 0.500 for all-time winning percentage.

The definition of a FOOTBALL SCHOOL

If Tennessee were to somehow lose 400 games this year, we’d still be above 0.500 for our all-time winning percentage.

Didn’t he write another famous book I had to read in middle or high school?

Check the math. They would have to lose 8 games. Because they play 12 games.

But your point is valid defenatly not a football school.

Geeeeeezz I'd be sitting in a rocking chair by the front door with some loaded tools. I agree with the security and video. You have his address? Send him boxes of dead animals and tell him you have a bigger box saved for him if he ever steps foot in your town.

Half the time, I jump into those threads and we are talking about different topics. Also, we have player threads for prospects that are not even on our radar. This forum isn't the best source.
HA. I love this forum! It's practically my go to news source! Someone dies...bam it's posted. Something invented...bam posted. A rival in shambles...bam posted!

Plus the amount of random bits of knowledge in here. We should seriously rename it the second coming of the Library of Alexandria. The randomness has turned an anonymous message board into quite the community.

By the way..whoever originally posted the news report of them using dynamite to blow up the whale carcass..thank you! I got my whole science and social studies grade level to start the year with that video!

Prof, thanks for the recommendations. I do agree it probably seems more productive to teach safe browsing habits. I do use a VPN, but mostly when traveling using hotel wifi.

Damn man, I’m so sorry y’all are having to go through this. It’s a weird world out there. I hope there’s no lingering issues that come from this.
