He was the best. I'll never forget his call in a game in Lexington when Bernard King almost by himself defeated the #1 blue b@st@rds. Near the end of the game, with the outcome in doubt, King rose to get an improbable rebound and put it back in for a crucial bucket and Ward shouted: "THIS YOUNG MAN CAN PLAY THIS GAME!!!" I can still hear the call in my head.

I thought some of the space related names would win out, but Trash Pandas got the most votes. My daughter and son-in-law are season ticket holders. They said the nickname fits because it’s apparently a new fad for minor league clubs to pick odd nicknames.

I figured it would be a space/rocket theme as well which they did incorporate it into the logos. I can’t remember the final 3-5 that they chose from but I didn’t really care for any of them. My only change to the name would’ve been North Alabama or Tennessee Valley Trash Pandas because of the far reach they have in the area and the fact that they’re not really in Huntsville proper. They’re in Madison geographically but likely in Huntsville city limits because of all the annexation that Huntsville has done in surrounding areas. Just not a fan of the Rocket City moniker but I’m notoriously a curmudgeon.
