I love Gilbert and Beck but…

Take off the orange glasses. Players represent a billion dollar organization. Baseball has enough PR issues. Just remember when you’re a 1st round pick you are expected to sell tickets and become the face of the franchise. Controlling intensity is not the same as neutering. Geez.

Big talk for a guy that is well below the Mendoza line as a poster. Agenda driven values are what they are.

This is what I'm sick and tired of, people downing our players and saying they should control their emotions but excuse the umpire, who is supposed to be a professional, making bad call after bad call. Don't suck at your job so bad that it causes someone to lose the temper. Not a single one of us is perfect about controlling our anger.

That ump was so SOFT that his Viagra has to take Viagra.

Don't suck and you won't have to worry about someone saying you suck.

Umpires need to be held accountable publicly. They should have to do post game interviews.

I am sympathetic to all the players who had to deal with that umpires awful and inconsistent strike zone.

But you cannot allow a player to speak like that to an umpire. Just cannot have it. Telling an umpire, “**** you” is going to get you tossed just about every time. He asked for it and he got it.

Agree with you about umpires being held accountable.

Yes, the pitch was way low, but that's beside the point. And every adult over 25 should well understand why.

He owes the ump an apology for bad language regardless and the ump owes him an apology for missing the call if video review indicates it was not a strike according to the rulebook. No doovers allowed but right is right.

Up until now I have been leaning towards some kind of automated strike call or assistance, but now I am all in for it. Thinking you can't eliminate the ump altogether, but maybe he has a buzzer indicating his call that has to be validated by a sytem that indicates it was over the plate. Judgements about top and bottom of the zone will be tougher to automate. Maybe there is a hard zone established that is a strike with areas at the top and bottom that pass the test if the ump says so. Would be hard to sell a fixed zone for guys of varied height.

They helped bring baseball to what it is , got to take the good with the bad. Lesson learned go on with your business. Their intensity and drive got baseball here.

What's the number where "suck at the job" is valid? 80% of the calls? 90%? What's the number? I would bet the majority of umpires are sitting at 93-97%.

Plus, that being said, should umpires be allowed to tell players they suck each time they make a mistake? If Beck swings at another 55 ft slider, can the plate guy get in his face and call him trash?

I would be astounded if that Umps percentage correct was even 80%. There are good umps out there, but this crew? This crew has it out for TN. The way that crew chief acted to Tony with the finger pointing was out of line. He has a God complex and you could tell. The announcers even mentioned that someone had to put their hand on the shoulder of the 3rd base ump to calm him down. He didn't have a damn dog in the fight.

Then today, if you noticed it, the home plate ump came out yelling at Beck when he got that monstrous 3Run Bomb. I'm actually surprised he didn't throw Beck out of the game. This umpire crew needs to be suspended.

… how can these guys be 1st round prospects? Baseball is a sport where the best players get out 70%, and the best teams lose 40% of their games.

Being intense and driven is one thing. Being unable to handle adversity or control yourself is another. Gilbert especially hurt his team. His actions led to us losing our pitching coach at a time where our guys need some help.

I hope both of these guys learn from this experience and become MLB all stars.

There‘s 6 pages between the OP and my reply so it may have already been said but…

Vols are undefeated when the pitching coach hasn’t been on the bench.
