War in Ukraine

Never in my years as a Cold War kid, would I of suspected that there would be massed armored warfare in Europe. Just shows that every nation needs to spend on R&D and procurement. It is very expensive and without such, Ukraine would of been overrun by now.

Putin 'to have cancer operation and hand power to hardline ex-spy chief'
VLADIMIR Putin is set to undergo an operation for cancer and will hand over power to his hardline spy chief, a Kremlin insider has reportedly claimed.
The claim was reported on Russian media outlet General SVR, which first raised issues of Putin’s health around 18-months ago.
They quote an anonymous former high-ranking Kremlin military figure as saying: “Putin has discussed that he will be undergoing medical procedures.”

From 2014, in case people are confused about how all of this started... Also a video describing the horrific massacre in Odessa.

We know how this started. The people overthrew an illegal government that opened fire on civilians and when the country was at its weakest Russia invaded.

So here is the US relying on imports again. Why can't this country simply develope its own talent and industry here domesically? This country is run by idiots. So we go begging to the Chinese for widgets, the Saudis and Venezuela for our oil and now looking to Russia for our scientists and engineers.

When your model is to teach to mediocrity and not educate to ability like much of the rest of the world does. They are going to put out better top level scientists and engineers than we do. We're wasting talent by not challenging it because that would be segregation by ability, and we can't have segregation in the US society. Cue luther and qualifications.

Bless your heart. I'd say your embracing of Russian propaganda is finally complete, much like Anakin Skywalker becoming Darth Vader. But lets be honest...you've bought into this for a long time..

so far from the russians ive spoken to, most are appreciative that we don't even talk politics, some express sadness and distate for their government, one was downright hateful toward everything russian, one didn't seem to support putin but made vague references to evils greater than putin...and one guy tried to send me nudes of his girlfriend and told me he fantasizes about how I'd "use her"

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, does not rule out a Ukrainian strike targeting the Kerch Strait bridge connecting the occupied Crimean peninsula with mainland Russia.

The top security official made the statement in an interview with Radio NV, Ukrinform reports.

"Had we had the ability to do it, we would’ve already done it. If there is an opportunity to this end, we will definitely do it," Danilov said.

This is a critical route for Russia's logistical support in the South.

Incoming newly-supplied long-range artillery in 3... 2...1...

Probably going to need guided weapons that make a bigger bang. The Paul Doumer Bridge near Hanoi is a classic example. Hits with most bombs didn't bring it down - they did knock out spans with 3000 lb bombs if they hit. The real bridge busting happened when laser guided 2 and 3000 lb bombs became available.

Take it for what little it's worth, its Newsweek, and when I tried to go to the source their servers were down or unavailable to me.

Russia, Belarus call on former Soviet nations to help form USSR-style union

The Russians alledegly want to form, a totally not Soviet, Union with some of their buddies.

A caveman could see that Pootin was trying to put the band back together. Some countries might be tempted, but you can bet Poland and most others don't want any part of it.

Sort of true. Was true. They can produce more if they want, but anyone that doesn't have to buy it is refusing it, and many are reusing to offload it from ships. Places like poland have been cut off, but can buy from other countries at a higher price. The big user of Russian oil is germany, who sell it to other countires like poland. What russia has done is set up a system in which you have to buy russian gold, and then buy rubles with the gold, which you can then spend with russia. This consolidates and gives the ruble value, but russia is bleeding money faster than it is taking in, and this consolidation will only work for so long. Also, germany is calling it black mail and now refusing. Just because they produce it does not mean they can offload it.

Imagine; currency actually backed by something. Something that most people can understand but economists don't get. Imagine the chaos if we floated the foot and all other related measures, and had standards markets where gamblers played the let's make a deal game. Or volumes - one day the prescribed dose of a med injected might do nothing - and the next it would OD and kill you.

Oh, I know. Poland has been spending a ton of money on their defense for years and actually it's a good thing that they can get some newer hardware while giving Ukraine their older stuff. The military suppliers were itching to sell some more stuff, hence the $33B "aide" package to Ukraine. This is a cycle that has been ongoing my entire life and I don't see it stopping until someone launches the first nuke and we eliminate 99% of the human population.

Maybe if warmongers are busy playing with relatively tame stuff, they'll be too busy and too invested to end it all with nukes. I mean where's the fun in developing stuff that you don't get to enjoy.

Not sure I agree. We spend a fortune on military R&D as evidenced by the weapons being displayed in this conflict. We get payback for this expensive R&D and production.

This is mostly low level stuff, sans M777, but it seems low cost weaponry has become so sophisticated and accurate that I am not sure where this goes.

I mentioned it several times before, but take a man fielded weapon that can take out a tank with more precision and distance than the tank itself, this is a revolution of dispersed warfare. It is a revolutionary step beyond GW1.

Not saying we or Poland or anybody doesn't need offensive firepower, but the defensive position has changed dramatically.

Makes you think that some weaponry like tanks and big floaty ships have seen their day, and are more a liability to the crews than a danger to the enemy. The handwriting was on the wall for ships in the Falklands if not before, and tanks in Iraq.

They think they're being smart trying to bring Poland into this.

They're really just scripting their own nightmare.
Oh so wait... is this going to be the talking point when Poland enters the conflict? Russia intentionally pulled Poland in?

Just curious what the motive would be for Russia to do that.

Also, I wonder how the ukrainians would feel about Poland crossing the border?
