A few days ago I posted a table that showed how our offensive drives played out with a focus on the percent of drives than ended in touchdowns. I’ve added the defensive side to that table looking at what percent of our offensive drives ending in TDs compared to what percent of our opponents drives ended in TDs.
Last year I think there was a ceiling to how well we could do on both sides of the ball, due partly to a talent deficiency and partly to a lack of depth and partly due to learning new systems on both sides of the ball. jmo.
In discussions dating back a few days, in response to me saying we needed to score more points on offense, someone suggested maybe if our defense would improve by 10%. Bill Connelly in his preseason SP+ expects our defense on paper to improve by 21% this year. In the same analysis he thinks our offense will improve by 5.8% (without McCoy).
I think an argument could be made that poor officiating hurt us in the Ole Miss and Purdue games. Against Pitt, maybe we win if Hooker plays the whole game. Against Kentucky while our defense couldn’t get their offense off the field they did come up with one interception, a pick six that turned out to be a critical factor in the outcome of the game. jmo.
I still think we have to score more points against teams like Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Maybe even LSU. I also agree that however we do it we need to keep those teams from putting up as many points against us this year. It’s a team game. jmo.
We still have talent and depth issues though maybe not as severe as last year. jmo.
Last week Paul Finebaum had a sports writer on from the Atlanta Journal Constitution that covers the Georgia football program. The guy said the only real threat to Georgia winning the East this year is Tennessee. I think that’s probably true because if Georgia’s defense as expected takes a step back this year then it’s almost a given that our offense will score more points against them. I think maybe our defense can hold them to around 34-35 points so if our offense can score more than that, well, that’s the formula. jmo.
