A couple notes or three –

First, in February and then again after the scrimmage on Saturday, Heupel emphasized our commitment to developing a 4-man pass rush. I think this is important because I think last year we were bringing a lot of the guys in the back end on blitz packages in order to augment our pass rush. It helped us set a school record for tackles for loss but sometimes it leaves us vulnerable in the back end. One writer noted that we gave up 36 3rd downs on scoring drives to our opponents last year, 33 of those were converted with a pass.

The second thing is related to our inability to run against elite run defenses as I alluded to in one of my previous posts. A few days ago Golesh speaking to the media said that our offense was going to continue to evolve. One of the media guys followed up speaking as though he was bewildered. He asked why would you want to change anything about the offense we had last year. I don’t remember exactly what Alex said but it was probably evasive.

But this is what I’ve heard. We’re adding option elements into our run game. This could be a game changer against elite defenses. jmo.

In 2011 Alabama had what some considered to be the best defense of all time. They were #1 in the nation in run defense, #1 in pass defense, #1 in total defense, and #1 in scoring defense. They were #1 in 3rd down defense and #1 in redzone defense.

That year they hosted the option oriented Georgia Southern offense (still FCS at the time). Georgia Southern rushed 39 times for 302 yards against the Tide (7.74 yards per attempt). Even including the Georgia Southern game Alabama on the year yielded only 2.43 yards per attempt on the ground or 72.15 yards/game.

The third thing is something I’ve also mentioned before. We gave up 44 sacks last year, good for last place in the conference and 124th nationally. Heupel continues to emphasize our need to improve our pass protection across the board.

How well we do this year I think largely will depend on how much we can improve on the defensive line in regards to our pass rush, how well we can create running yards against elite defensive fronts, and how well we can protect our QB. jmo.

The one thing that is really encouraging is that our coaches aren’t trying to hide the challenges our team faces relative to our strength of schedule and they are smart, open, and honest about addressing those challenges. As a result we probably have a significant opportunity to win more games this year than might otherwise be expected. jmo.
We are never going to have big games running the ball against elite defenses...because they are elite defenses. We do need to at least become effective in the running game against those defenses.

We are not going to run effectively or become above average in pass protection until we sign and develop dominant OL at every position.

Was over there the other day, just me and dad. Talking about the Vols and then we had a good conversation. Definitely gives me some peace knowing I said the things I've wanted to say. Grew up poor and rarely got to do much together. Seemed like we'd have a few fun trips each year. Sometimes getting to be on the lake a few weekends in the summer, sometimes seeing the races at the local dirt track. Never appreciated it enough as a kid, didn't realize just how much of a struggle those things were for him and mom to pull off until becoming a father myself. So we talked a bit about that. Reminisced together and cried together. Said my piece, heard his advice and told him how lucky and proud I am he's my dad.

He's never been much for those sort of conversations though...don't know if we'll get another chance to have one again.
Oh, you’ve got me crying! Will be praying for you!

Don’t think so. I’m pretty sure he re-classified knowing that he was most likely going to redshirt. It’s just the nature of the business. I think Barnes is trying to bring in more talent that can play now, and Tamba was just an odd man out.
I think its also very possible this was just a developmental opportunity for a player like Tamba. He had a chance to come into state of the art facilities and training/nutrition, learn from some of the best coaches in the country and practice against some of the best players in the country after not being super highly sought after. Now he can go into a better situation with more development than he would have going to a smaller school then transferring up.
