Recruiting Forum Football Talk IV

Sharing some personal stuff, one to kinda get it off my chest and since this is anonymous it helps: My "uncle" (basically family) is a Vandy grad and diehard Vandy baseball fan. He was the coolest guy when I was a little kid. He used to take me to Vandy v UT basketball games in Nashville. But he always had the odd job where he would just disappear. Then he'd show up unannounced at our house with a gift for me. One time, it was an Atlanta Falcons Brett Favre rookie card in perfect condition. I still have it. But really, the last decade or so I haven't seen or talked to him at all. He and my dad started having a rocky relationship because he would disappear and he started drinking heavily. Then about 6 months ago he somehow got my number and started texting me. Offered me a job in New Zealand on the vineyard he was about to buy for when I graduate (we couldn't figure out where in the world he got this money). Started talking Vol and Vandy stuff. Talking about his son. He managed to get Vandy VIP tickets to the College World Series and wanted to take me and my dad to see Vandy and the Vols. He mended things with my dad. It's been cool, but also odd. Recently, everything made sense...

We found out about a month ago that he has terminal bone cancer (mid-50s). And to top it off, the last few decades he's been working for a... let's say... private branch of the government.... and has killed many people.... and speaks fluent Russian. My dad knew he had gotten a minor in Russian and did some ROTC. We didn't know he had gotten that far. That's why he would disappear then come back with wild gifts (signed Messi jersey for his son) and such. And why he had so much money. And why he started struggling with alcoholism.

He informed all his family and closest friends, and he's now in the Ukraine fighting. Assuming he dies, his children will get a massive payout for him volunteering. Through all of that, I've somehow become a local legend over there because he's showing the locals pictures from some of my adventures and fish that I've caught. And he sends me messages in Russian occasionally. Here was today's, Go Vols and appreciate the chance to share:

Truly cool story. Sounds like a great guy too.

Just found out that my wife and I will be having a little girl. First child coming this fall! Dads with daughters.. hit me up with some advice if you feel led.

They are the sweetest things ever. I have a 3 year old little girl (our 1st and likely only child). She is the light of our world. Makes even the worst days a little bit better.

My advice is to listen to your wife on most things girl related. There are so many things I didn't know girls had to worry about on the daily. Also, help out everywhere you can, especially if your wife also works. My wife and I had a system where I would get up change diapers, give bottles, and rock her to sleep at night and she would mostly take care of those things during the day.

Congrats and good luck!

On a Wednesday?
We are about to be insufferable

It’s amazing the difference between the hype of todays team compared to those great teams of the 90’s….. I went to a regional….. had super cheap tickets….. sat where I wanted to sit…. for a team that had at least three future pros on it. Now….. you can hardly get tickets to a Wednesday night game.

Enjoy the first 13-15 years. After that they, ahem, change. And you become just another wall for them to argue with.

Seriously though, don't sweat it too much. In the tough moments, cling to the fact that you will remember the joys and will mostly forget the hard times and frustrations.

A college baseball game is a really relaxed enjoyable time, and, compared to football you don’t have to navigate 100k fat sweaty guys and gals from rural TN for a sprite and popcorn. I was there from ‘03-‘07 and always enjoyed the baseball. The game is too long though, would like to see breaks consolidated.

There is no such thing as too long…. I love every minute of it.
