Womens basketball is terrible, but I think this is a good answer from KH
Probably going to catch some snark for this, but I need to get it out there.
We went to church with Pat and her family for over 20 years. We have been friends with many LV supporters and have met a handful of players and employees along with other UTAD staff and VFL's. I can safely say that Kellie would be a hand pick choice of Pat's to succeed her for the job along with a couple other past LV's. I doubt there is much in the way of dispute about that.
Observationally - she was not ready for the job when she was hired. It was a hire to placate the LV supporters and to bet on her having the upside to get it done eventually without having to sell an outside hire and pay bigger bucks in doing so. LV supporters, in general, did not want a male HC. They wanted a protege of Pat's. So she checked the box.
Kellie has grown into the role and is now a top 20 head coach IMO as she has instilled the defensive toughness and not give up attitude. She has begun recruiting at a higher level. She understands fully the expectations as a LV and for the program.
Her weakness continues to be offense, which may be partially due to the current roster. The other weakness is simply maturing as a person in authority. She still acts like a young assistant coach at times. The offense has not been adapted well to the players she has. So, the question remains as to whether she has the staff she needs to do better at it? The HC cannot be all things to all people. They all have strengths and weaknesses and depend on others to shore the up.
My personal opinion is that she and us will not know if she and the team can become elite until she has a full roster of just her recruits who have been in a competent system for a couple of years. There is promise, will see if there is fruition. I appreciate her giving all she has for Tennessee today.
For an example and wisdom on how a young HC can go about creating a Big Orange monster, all she has to do is walk over to Voltello's office and have a discussion. Maybe she has. Will see how it goes.
