I agree, Barnes IS a great coach and any calls for his firing or even for his seat to be hot here are premature imo. Unless you have a sure fire upgrade lined up, you don't make that move. However...
Question: Do you think that Barnes has underperformed in March over the course of his career? It's certainly not a small sample size.
Yep, just ask Kentucky.I don't think this is a fair question. March is a very random time when it comes to matchups and the question always comes down to one game. You can say that well, this or that is a terrible loss but the truth is that every team in the tourney deserved to be there and usually about 5-10 more teams that are shunted over to the NIT did too. Look at this way... How many NIT teams own victories over teams still playing? Texas AM just beat the fire out of Arkansas who had the easiest path to a Sweet 16 of any seed. Are they a better team? Michigan is about like TAMU or Ark in that under the right circumstances they're going to win the game in front of them even if it's against a team that we all think is better than them if the game is played 100 times. Well, the right circumstances happened.
Barnes was about 50-50 against ranked teams this year and the team showed real weakness away from home (I think that was due to the freshmen just not being as confident as they will be after playing more). That's exactly what we got in the tourney. A quality win and a quality loss. There is a level of parity in men's basketball that doesn't exist in most other sports. I think that's what's giving folks trouble. Any team can win the matchups on the right day.
A friend asked me for things to do in Nashville
Been a while since I was there
What should I tell him?
This is why you can’t listen to the talking heads saying there is no difference between a 2-3 seed. Give TN the St Peters/Murray St 1st/2nd rd matchup and we cruise. Give TN the Cal St Fullerton/Michigan St matchup and we move on. Instead they sneak a team in to tourney that underachieved after being ranked 6th in preseason polls knowing they can be a fake Cinderella ratings upset potential team if it all clicked. It was a bad matchup. We had no answer for Dickinson who couldn’t miss. Howard coached a great game like he did last year in their big tourney run. Just sucks that we ended up with what normally is a talent matchup you see in sweet 16 we see in rd2. We played well just couldn’t get a 3 to drop and their defense took vescovi completely out and he made bad shot selections in frustration.
And, if possible and depending on the day or days of visit, I would suggest hitting up the lower broadway honkytonks on a weekday evening as opposed to a fri or Sat night. Traffic and parking are both a nightmare on weekend evenings now. The venue directly across from Bridgestone facing broad has some good eateries and with the weather getting warmer, there will be lots of good music on the skydeck generally on the weekend nights.Preds game if he can (funnest thing to do in Nash bar none), 5th and Broadway (swanky food court and shops) for dinner since so close. Desano’s Pizzeria for chill dinner great pizza. Or if want to spend some money… drinks at Patterson House then 5th and Taylor in Germantown (sausage biscuit apps and short ribs if on menu). Pinewood Social for brunch. TopGolf if never been to one. Any sort of club or music venue like bluebird or Lindsey). Nashville is fun. Enjoy.
I was listening to usce pregame on Friday and they were talking about our gaudy numbers, especially on offense. They didn't come right out and say it, but they implied we weren't as good offensively as it looks because of who we've played. They said they've played a much tougher schedule, so...
Now they know.
He made a comment in his post-game that got my attention. Something to the affect, "this school deserves a chance to have more success...it's been a blessing for me to coach here."
Good chance we would have lost one of those games and the narrative would have been why do we always have to play the hot Cinderella team…. Michigan had lost 4 out of its last 7 games and was without its starting point guard….. we shouldn’t have lost that game. This is why you can’t listen to the talking heads saying there is no difference between a 2-3 seed. He might be ready to hang it up but I don’t think Barnes seems like the kind of person that would be that sensitive to that kind of talk.Honestly would not be surprised. Barnes knows there is so much more to life than basketball, and I am sure he hears the discussion about his post season record.
Oof. Who all is out?
The upside is this squad, even the B or C squad, has played up to competition recently. Hopefully they can do so again.
The odd thing about Barnes is that, from roughly 2002-2008 he was considered a great NCAA tournament coach, going to the Sweet 16 and beyond 5 out of 7 seasons, with one FF and two EE’s. Then starting with the 2008-2009 season we get the long 1 in 10 stat we keep seeing. Not sure what changed.
