The Atlanta Braves

Don't know. That's my point though. KD wanted to chase rings too and left for a loaded team. Weak ass bitch.
He went through how many rebuilds? He watched all the best players get traded how many times? He went were the money was the most and the years the longest. He wanted to stay in Atlanta but he overplayed it and lost. Quite being weird.

That's a very reasonable take. I think the "He wanted to leave the whole time!!!" crowd is forgetting how he stayed through multiple blow-ups of the roster.

More I think about it, the more I think he just wanted to leave. Braves offered more $$ per year and he still went to the Dodgers. If he REALLY wanted to be here, the 6th year would not have been as big of a hold up that it was.

Sucks to think about, but it is what it is. Braves are younger and could make the case that they are better now also. Thanks for the memories #5

In fairness, he didn’t “run” anywhere. He chose the dodgers when he no longer had the chance to play in Atlanta.
Technically yes the decision was made for him but he had that offer from Atlanta for a long time and was holding out for more. AA got tired of him holding us hostage and made the decision for him. At the end of the day if Freddie wanted to be a Brave he would have.

Agree but I buck the notion he “ran to the dodgers”

At some point, AA had to make the call because you'd hate to not grab Olson and then Freeman goes to the Duds and we are left golding the bag. Rizzo? No thanks.

It's basically the same amount of money. The deal Freddie signed is 6/162 ($27m per) and reportedly he turned down a deal offering 5/140 ($28).

Neither side was willing to bite a bullet to get the deal done. I'm not sure Freddie wanted to leave, but he was more open to leaving than most fans thought he was and wanted to maximize his value, even if it meant leaving. On the flip side, the Braves weren't necessarily willing to do whatever it took to keep him either. If either side wanted him back as much as we thought, the deal would have gotten done.

I think there was some serious frostiness to the relationship between Freddie and the FO, and that played a role in this. Freddie wanted to get paid after his MVP season and rightfully so. AA knew that wasn’t the time, and it snowballed.

I don’t have a problem with the way AA handled it. He doesn’t have the emotional hedge like Braves fan have had, he made a smart business decision. I would’ve gave Freddie the 6th year tho.

Yep. I mentioned this in another post (I think), but with 20/20 hindsight I wonder if the Freddie ship sailed once last offseason came and went without him having a new contract.

Not only did Freddie want to get paid, I bet he expected the FO to just give him whatever he wanted without discussion or pushback. He had a hell of a year, even though it was shortened, and it wasn't completely unreasonable for him to think that. There was some pushback, that frustrated him, and he doesn't like to talk money during the season, so it remained on the table and festered. Then the abbreviated offseason limits discussions after the 2021 season.

Ultimately it boiled down to neither side being as interested in having the other one back as fans thought they were. Most people (myself included) thought Freddie would take one less year, or the Braves would bite the bullet and overpay him, or a combo of both. It ended up being more of a business decision than people thought, which honestly shouldn't be that surprising.

The Dodgers can have whatever stacked lineup they want. All I know if your Atlanta Braves are the current and defending champs. Bring on all the smoke

We actually do need another Braves-Dodgers NLCS. Freddie going to LA reminds me of Yanks-Boston in the early 2000’s

Gotta wonder what we offered and how different the numbers are.

I say this not in doubt of what we did with Olson, but more because I know nothing about the guy because I only follow what the Braves do.

Braves sign new pickup Olson to 8-year deal

"Speaking of breaking news, as the Braves were introducing Olson during a press conference on Tuesday, they announced they had already signed him to an eight-year, $168 million contract that includes a $20 million club option for the 2030 season."

So the Braves are paying Olson $168 mill over 8 years and Freddie getting $162 mill for 6 years. I'm too poor to see the difference as significant. Bottom line, Freddie must have wanted to move on.

I think both sides did what they had to do. If not for COVID, maybe Freddie would have gotten the Olson contract two years ago. I don’t know that he WANTED to leave, but he was WILLING to leave and maybe he felt that he’d already done the organization a solid on his last contract and wanted to be compensated for that. Or maybe he just decided that he was ok with leaving on a good note coming off of a championship. Either way, I think it’s going to work out for everyone.

I think Freddie thought he was worth more. But when the Yankees and Braves left the picture, and San Diego can't move Hosmer, he was left with the Dodgers and no leverage. The Braves didn't want to wait and be left holding the bag. This isn't a bad result for anybody but the Yankees, which is fine. I would have like to kept Freddie at a good price, but that's not how it played out.
