You laugh, but it seems that many prefer that answer. I just prefer to look for the best and remain positive until it's clear that's misplaced.
SS, nobody is being negative. I was just pointing out that Burns proved to not be a great hire so any of this "just trust the coaches!" stuff is irrelevant. The only complaint that I am making is that I would prefer it to be someone with experience. I don't think that's some extreme take.

I'm also not too sure how much I trust AP and VQ.

I think the heat could have been turned down on DJ while administration things happen or maybe he reached out to us and Heupel just didn't feel like it was a great fit once meeting him.
It could have been something that simple. Maybe DJ doesn't mesh with this offense? That's fine if so. Seems like we could have found someone more proven is all.

To be fair though, if you look at Heupel's hiring history for offense how many times has he gone out and hired a proven name. I mean even Burns wasn't exactly proven.

Again, you can say I'm no expert at the receiver position. And you'd be right. But Swain is. And he threw a party when he left. By every report I've heard from people I know and from Austin Price, he was terrible at recruiting. We have a chance to upgrade here. Is Pope an upgrade? Maybe. Who knows? My preference would have been to hire someone proven. Shoot me.
oh i think you're an an expert at receiver... all things catcher.

My counter to this would be that he's at TN now. Not UCF. At TN he put up one of the best offenses in college football. Hiring a proven coach here could have been done. But at the end of the day, it's his choice and if he thinks Pope can get it done then let's see it. Seems unnecessarily risky tho

I agree with how you phrased this. Cause I don't think Burns was bad here, but he definitely wasn't a great hire. On paper he had plenty of speed/talent in that WR room too and to only see the upperclassmen really take strides has you wondering.

Swain and AP both are the worst for turning on anyone that leaves (except Tee for some odd reason...) but typically they don't think we've ever lost a good coach and always think we can upgrade.

This is certainly true.

Whomever gets hired, it’s going to be an educated variety. This isn’t Pruitt plopping a QB’s coach at RB or a non-teaching recruiter at ILB’s. On the Pope candidacy, all’s I’ll say is that his name is in a lot of mentions by some heady recruits. He has experience as a WR’s coach with Tennessee Tech and Gardner-Webb and Heupel has had opportunity to purview his teaching since last February. I can see why the hire wouldn’t stoke many Vol fans, but that’s me with retreading Coach YAC…and I’d withhold optimistically pending results on that one. Throwing our VN bodies against the tide of a hire is as impactful as our real carcasses in Gulf Shores.

Could actually be the BEST time to do it. Ya return Hooker & Tillman, and most of the WR group you expect to produce for you knows Pope well, knows the system well and is ready to ball out.

I take that stuff into consideration as well, if you took a new job or had a large turnover in a position group you may want a more proven name to help develop the guys faster and also make a splash in recruiting.

Yeah, making a splash hire and getting good buzz isn't on Heupel's list. He's confident in his system and finding people who can work and recruit well within it drives his decisions.

if you said that about the political stuff id agree.

this is a sports message board. if you dont like him, block him. That's what ive done for @InVOLuntary, @Weezer, @engineerVOL, and @Glitch. Those idgits summitted Mt Moran more times that I can count.

I apologize @Jackcrevol. I am passionate about freedom and liberty. However, you are correct. This is a sports message board and we should leave the political stuff at the door. I will try to do better in the future.

Pope and CJH are filling in for Burns and recruiting isn't skipping a beat. Burns leaving was no surprise, UT didn't attempt to retain him and worked a very short list to replace him. Fit, recruiting and keeping the culture are more important than timing.
@LA Vol I know you been around a while. Can you briefly describe the difference between this staff and the last staff, as far as how they go about hiring coaches. Also how do you feel about the way this staff goes about recruiting opposed to the last one.. I will hang up an listen 😂😂😂
