And yet Burns got hired by an NFL team? I get the "we didn't need him anyway" mentality, but maybe there is a middle ground? I'm not suggesting that Heupel is infallible, but I'm not sure our external perception always matches the reality.
Well, Burns doesn't have to recruit in the NFL, does he?

UT is already helping ZZ's family. The delay in promoting the public fundraising platform is because it's interdepartmental, requiring cooperative effort between UT compliance, communications and athletics to avoid further NCAA violations. Any time you loop in compliance and legal--especially when the university has an open NCAA investigation-- it's going to take more time. UT is taking compliance very seriously and communicating very clearly with the NCAA. It would be nice if the process moved faster, but nothing involving the NCAA and compliance oversight is as simple as it should be.

Right. So he was hired because of his coaching ability, which according to some, he doesn't have.
Again, you can say I'm no expert at the receiver position. And you'd be right. But Swain is. And he threw a party when he left. By every report I've heard from people I know and from Austin Price, he was terrible at recruiting. We have a chance to upgrade here. Is Pope an upgrade? Maybe. Who knows? My preference would have been to hire someone proven. Shoot me.

if you said that about the political stuff id agree.

this is a sports message board. if you dont like him, block him. That's what ive done for @InVOLuntary, @Weezer, @engineerVOL, and @Glitch. Those idgits summitted Mt Moran more times that I can count.
I’m surprised on the amount of backlash I’m getting for smh at a “smh” post…lol

Are any of the finalists actually known as great recruiters? I think Heupel values teaching over recruiting. His philosophy seems to be let the results do the recruiting. We'll see how that works out. We've seen where great recruiters that can't teach have gotten us.

If we know who the finalists are, then I would argue that two are really good recruiters: DJ and Heard. Dixon recruited well at Florida also. Pope has never recruited anyone.

DJ would have been a great hire because of his recruiting connections and his coaching ability. He would have been great for the young guys in the room too. He can both develop and recruit and has done both at a high level. Dude put kids in the league from Memphis.

Pope may turn out to be the best WR coach in the country. But he could also be a poor hire because he has no experience. On this side of it, I'm disappointed if he's the guy because we could have had a more proven commodity. At the end of the day, it's WR coach and not OC so it isn't the biggest deal. But someone who could help us bring in talent would have been an upgrade to this staff.

My counter point...Swain has never coached a day in his life at the college or NFL level. So he may know how to play the position but I wouldn't consider him an expert on coaching it.

I don't think Burns was good. Not saying he was, and I think he wanted to coach at UCF cause of location and it being a bit easier. Being an Auburn guy he may have just not given a **** while at UT, came here just to wait on the next thing to pop up. He did recruit pretty well for this year's class though, but we may be better off with someone more invested taking over to develop those guys anyway.

I get that Pope isn't proven, so obviously it's a TBD if he'd be an upgrade. I just don't want us to drag it out much longer and miss having someone in place to start recruiting (Junior's day coming up for example).

We have to have someone in place by this weekend. I really wonder what happened with DJ. There was momentum there, he was the leader in the club house on Monday, and now that's dead. Maybe he just wanted to go down with his friend at FSU. Mistake, but maybe he's that loyal.

Myself, I wanted DJ, but if he's off the board (as AP suggests) then I'm fine with Pope. Here's the thing, we have no idea who actually has interest in the job, and who's just using us for a raise. I don't actually mind Heupel looking for someone who "fits" this staff. The last thing we need is someone rocking the boat.

I agree with that. That's why it's good that Burns is gone. Didn't fit, didn't put in the recruiting work, and just didn't work out here. By all accounts the players love Pope. Hopefully he proves to be a good hire if he's the guy.
