I haven't kept up with the reasons Russia is invading Ukraine, it seems Putin doesn't want NATO allies near his border. If he takes over Ukraine he'll be surrounded by NATO allies. Is it possible he keeps going into Romania or Poland? I haven't heard any good reasons why russia would waste time, money, energy etc. to invade a country like Ukraine.

That is just a pretext, don't fall for it. He wants Ukraine to be a part of Russia. That is the reason for the invasion. Hell, he wrote articles about it prior to even taking power in Russia. It is like Hitler telegraphing his great plan in Mein Kompf and no one paid attention.

Putin thinks that Russia should have never allowed the other states under its influence prior to 1991 to gain independence.

I dont wish for any Russian deaths and I dont think Ukraine can last very long but it will certainly help the USA and EU if they can give the bear a big bloody nose. A long term insurgency meh, that is par for the course for former and once again parts of the Russian empire but a difficulty actually capturing in a blitzkrieg will show that the Russian military is not as invincible as feared, which would be a real blow to Putin's projections.

Putin has to thread the needle a bit of course. Not cause too many civilian casualties but not be afraid to cause any incidental ones on the way to a swift and brutal win. Good for us if Ukraine military can hold out but the conclusion is foregone. I am not sure if I am your average Ukrainian grunt that I am willing to die so that the USA and EU can be benefitted unless I really have another reason to hate the Russians - and a lot of them don't.

For this to stop and not spread will require Putin to suffer damage. So I unapologetically root for Russian deaths. The alternative is their success and a continuation of the spread of this.

Russia’s first actions are hit or miss. It’s not looking as bad as I would have thought. Fewer cruise missile & air strikes. An early use of ground forces without reducing Ukraine’s military.
We will learn a great deal about the Russian military. It seems weaker than suspected.
