Recruiting Forum Football Talk IV

Bruce has been a lone wolf since the beginning of his coaching carrier. He knows basketball and knows how to get his players to play hard for him. However, he has always been living on the edge with his recruiting practices and his inability to realize that one is responsible for his actions. Was his stay at Tennessee productive? Yes. He recruited well and won some games some other coaches would likely have lost. However, his ability to control his actions, follow the rule of the game, and his consistent failure to realize that there is a place for honesty and integrity. A number of talented people have disregarded the importance of running a clean ship and have run that ship aground. Bruce is one of the leaders of running his ship aground.
The NCAA rules are idiotic….. they have/had a rule where you can give a kid a bagel and cream cheese but he wasn’t allowed to combine the two….. The rule Bruce broke was such an idiotic rule that the ncaa changed it shortly after they punished Bruce for it.

Phil stated that he knew where the bodies were buried….. that’s bc we crossed those lines over and over again during the 90’s…. Auburn paid 250,000 to get Cam Newton and was rewarded with a National chanpionship…. Kansas and Auburn had coaches implicated in the FBI probe….. They responded by giving their coaches lifetime contracts…. Kansas even though a party with snoop shooting fake money into the crowd….. we would have fired everyone, investigated ourselves, and put winning last as we have for most of the past 15 or so years.

The NCAA Compliance Rule Book is absolutely ridiculous. I'm sure I still have it laying around somewhere. It makes the USGA Rules of Golf look like a 1st grade level book.

I have tried to stay out of this because everyone is just speculating. I was upset the day that we decided to let him go. His teams were fun to watch.

But in hindsight, after trying to put pieces of the puzzle together, I don’t get the feeling that the school left him out to dry. There is an ESPN article out there that interpreted Bruce’s contract at UT, and the school provided a lot of protection for him. It only allowed him to get terminated for cause if there was a NCAA finding that a “significant violation” occurred. An attorney is quoted as saying it was a great contract for a coach. Mike Hamilton is quoted as saying, “he made one mistake and corrected it. He’s our coach.”

I also believe there’s a chance he lied to some of his own bosses at one point. That is something that is very difficult to overcome. They can’t help him if he lies, and you can never really trust him again.

At some point, there is personal accountability, and he has to own it.

This all day. Your last paragraph sums up a significant change in our society. No longer is there personal accountability. Find someone else to blame, that’s the new way. It’s not your fault, it’s your parents, your teachers, your bosses, your country. It’s just not right, but it’s becoming acceptable to accept no blame.

I was raised by my Mother and two older sisters. I am going on 25 years of marriage. It’s always been my fault.😂 Life is actually much easier if you learn to accept blame and be responsible for your actions. 🤔

Honestly…. This isn’t about Bruce Pearl the person…… it is about how a university handles its business…. If the same exact situation had happened at our rivals….. Auburn, Georgia, Alabama, or Florida….. Bruce would have still been coaching at those programs bc they would have desired winning over anything else. They would have handled the original situation…. Taken the secondary violation and moved

I don’t know about that. Everyone knew how important Bruce was to our program and where he brought us from. I think the NCAA gave us no choice and threatened to unleash all holy heck on our program unless we fired him. He not only lied to them and our power players but he orchestrated a plan for his assistants to do same and cover up further. All he had to do was admit to it and it’s a slap on wrist

At the point…. Yes we were left without many options….. the time to handle it was before the first meeting…. I’ll quit talking about this but we constantly seem to handle these issues in the same manor…. Our self investigation is another example…. I do have hope that by hiring Danny White that it may help us to figure it out and start acting like other programs.

This. It wasn't the secondary that did it.it was the lie...and the other stuff that would have come out had we kept him once we pissed the ncaa off.

I hated it at the time and it does trigger me...just a little...to see auburn today. Throw in kiffin at Ole miss and I can understand anyone playing the 'what might have been' game.
But still also realize we're in a good place now and playing that afformentioned game isn't worth more than a passing thought.

The NCAA reacted the way it did because Bruce flat out LIED to them. They lost all trust because he lied. If he has said, yea, we had a cookout and they were there, Bruce would still be our coach. It is that simple.

The main thing I was upset about with how the UT admin handled the Bruce Pearl situation was that the admin knew the NCAA had the BBQ picture before they interviewed Pearl. The NCAA told our admin not to let Pearl know they had the picture. And of corse .. the UT admin let Pearl hang himself.

How many other admins would let their coach hang out there like that and even risk him lying to the NCAA on a minor violation?

Yea, well, I don’t ever want to be a fan of any of those schools. I am not going to say that Mike Hamilton was a good AD, but no one has the insight as to exactly what transpired.

I want to win as much as everyone else, but we still have to have some sense of integrity. That’s why I am proud of Rick Barnes leading my basketball program. I don’t know about basketball, but he is a great man. Folks should watch Chris Beard’s media availability from Thursday. He had 2 assistants with him that also coached (and one played) under Rick. Really a special coach. Let’s appreciate what we have instead of gushing over someone whose own mistake led to his ouster.

Who knows that? Show me how those are facts. Bruce also apparently called Aaron Craft’s family to tell them to not tell the truth.
