Can somebody explain to me why the Titans went for two after their first TD? Like is their coach retarded?
What I heard on here is that the have the best short yardage offense in the league and they liked his aggressiveness going to for it. What I think is that it was dumb. You never know when you might need that point. May not have cost them the game in the end, because the Bengals would have played it differently if they were behind and so would the Titans. Still, way too early to go for two.

They accepted a penalty against the Bengals on their TD play. It placed the ball at the one yard line. They had just scored on a Henry run from the 3 yard line. They thought they could make it but whiffed a block. The decision was good, the play call and execution sucked.
Agree with everything you said except that the decision was good. That is why two point conversions are converted at less than a 50% rate. It just takes one whiffed block to blow it up.

The OC didn't make tannehill throw ints. Dolphins fans watched that game and had ptsd. Titans roster was good enough to hide it the last two years. He ain't it.
I'm not saying he's the best but for next year there's no one else. Unless they trade to pick up Pickett the draft is a wash for QBs. They need to get an OC that actually knows what they're doing and allow him to pick his players in the draft. Mehrable won't do it because he's too full of himself

I would have rather kicked the extra point and take the penalty on the kick off. But not kick it out of the back of the endzone, but try to pin them deep inside the 15-10 yard line. That’s what I would do in those situations.

It’s 50/50. I believe the percentage of success is literally almost 50% and that’s at the 2 yard line. The thinking is you try again when you score another TD if you miss the first one.

Kinda random but how different would all our lives be had alabama hired rich Rodriguez instead of saban.

Or if Mack brown didn’t block saban from taking the Texas job when he retired.

Man I can’t wait for the streak to end.
Nick Saban is not a terrible person, and any fan would kill for him to be running their program, but he is absolutely the worst thing to happen to Tennessee football this century.

The Steelers do it all the time as well…. Extra points are not as automatic anymore…. Titans field goal kicker has missed three this year and field is trash for footing just like Heinz field is.

No he is not…… we would be a mess whether he existed or not….. our own administration destroyed this program from the inside.

It was from 1 yd out. That's the only reason. He wasn't going for it originally.

1 yd out with DH made it a pretty easy decision. He probably makes it 80% of the time, so it's well worth 2 points. Early in the game too, so that's a big difference too, not like it was in Q4 that would be a lot different.
The fact that it was in the first quarter is the whole problem. You should never do it in the first quarter. We don't have numbers on the success rate for 2 point conversions from the one. I doubt it is 80%.

Go get Rodgers

I think Vrabel just got greedy there. I don’t actually know what the “analytics” say on it, but going for it on 4th and goal from the 1 is a much more justified risk than going for 2 from the 1 — the reward is 4 additional points, whereas Vrabel was chasing 1 additional point. Moreover, situationally, I just don’t understand the call at all. You have the chance to take the lead with a PAT, and while you’d rather have a 2-point lead, all else equal, it doesn’t really do that much for you to be up 2 instead of 1.

That being said, the Titans had three crucial plays where they needed one yard and got stuffed with the most dominant back in the game, so it is on execution also.

In the NFL, the analytics say go for 2 in that situation. It’s based on a bunch of simulations that predict what the opponent’s most likely next several scores will be, and it finds that 8 is more helpful in more situations than 6 is detrimental.

Now, if coaching football was about setting an algorithm that would win the most games out of a million simulations, then I would say it’s probably the right call. But that’s not what coaching football is (especially playoff football).

6-6 vs 7-6 for a computer is just two-different sets of numbers. But for players, for real people, having a lead vs being tied can effect your attitude, your morale, your decision making, etc. It makes a difference in a way that raw numbers in a simulation can’t reproduce. So coaches are better off, IMO, leaning on a lifetime of instincts forged from playing/coaching/watching the game to make those kinds of decisions, as opposed to consulting a chart.

(Btw, this post is in support of your position.)

We had greedy morons at the helm here, no doubt about it. Even still, what Saban did for Alabama, to college football on the whole, and against Tennessee was like a cat 5 hurricane and 8.0 earthquake hitting us at the same time.

Agree. The evidence is right in front of everybody. Arthur left. The O and Tannehill deteriorated severely with essentially the same players minus Henry for half the season. The division sucks competitively. It was a mirage. The reality of a bad OC and Vrabel surfaced for all to see yesterday.

For goodness sakes - the D sacked Burrow 9 times yesterday. You win a game like that 9 times out of 10 even with a suspect secondary. The O did very little with all of their opportunities. So they lost.

Hire a real OC and let him shape the roster for the offense.

I believe there was a penalty that gave them half the distance as well.

Absolutely win that game 9/10 times with the same rosters, location, and stakes if you play it again and again.

Could not have called a worse game offensively.

I read where it is estimated to be between 65-70% success rate from the one compared to 93% on extra points…Having Derrick Henry probably makes them feel like that % is a little bit higher.
