President Joe Biden - Kamala Harris Administration

Something that people that believe the economy is doing well are missing it the fact that smaller businesses (especially restaurants) are falling by the wayside while the large companies grow.
Where are you seeing that happening? I am here in Tennessee and the smaller restaurants overall seem to be doing just fine.

Here in SWVA the extended unemployment benefits, eviction moratoriums, stimulus payments, child credits, and increased minimum wage but a walloping on restaurants that they haven't gotten past yet. Most, but definitely not all, are still open around here, but when you go in are only seating half their tables. The reasons: can't get employees because they can't afford to outpay the government and the market here is willing to pay (in most cases) $10/meal at most and is horrible at tipping.

I think we're about to see closures here soon.

They didn't vote for Biden for policy reasons. They just wanted Orange Man out of there.
Oh I'm aware of that. Especially considering the fact that Biden is an actual racist who was mentored by segregationist Democrats. But you would think they would be defending their decision and bragging on their guy instead of obsessing over another man (Trump).

You do realize many of those restaurant workers moved onto other fields like manufacturing, retail, grocery, work from home, delivery (Doordash, UberEats), etc? Then there is the fact that many restaurants are still requiring masks to be worn the entire shift. Trust me it's not much fun having to wear a mask in an environment like that. Then the unruly and rude customers seemed to increase during this time. I notice many of the restaurants here seem to be getting staffed but there are some still having issues.

I do think all the mask wearing needs to be ditched at this point along with any vaccine requirements.

I promise you, not where I live. The few factories we have left are cutting shifts, and the only retail places that seem to be doing OK are the Targets and Walmarts of the area. The small retail places, and the hair salons and coffee shops that we know, have had to cut back or close due to lack of staffing. The grocery store my parents do their pickup of groceries from when they don't want to go in couldn't accommodate their order just this week due to staffing. My car has been sitting at the shop for two days now because they can't get guys to do state inspections. Some of the coffee shops we know have only just moved away from to go only because they can't get inside staff.

It depends on where you are. The market and economy in SWVA is lazy and stagnant. I've posted a lot about it before. This COVID mess and paying people not to work is having an outsized impact on places that weren't strong to begin with.

Much of this could have been prevented in the restaurant industry had they focused on retaining actual good staff members prior to the pandemic. That never seemed to be a priority of upper management/ownership of some of the restaurants where I was a manager. They seemed to love the high turnover rate.

Although SWVA is a red area Virginia had turned into a blue state. Hopefully this is a lesson for anyone thinking about voting democrat in the future.

I don’t know where you live but nearly every restaurant I have visited is either having limited availability of seating or understaffed

Roanoke and Blacksburg are both bright blue.
Roanoke is a shithole getting shittier.

I learned last week that we are short 90 police officers. No coincidence that our shootings and crime are through the roof.

To fix it our esteemed council passed a plastic bag tax, funded needle exchanges, and is moving the bus station into the middle of the only safe and nice area downtown.

It's also not my fault or your fault those restaurants are unable to find replacements for the employees that left for better jobs.

You are making big assumptions that they "left for better jobs". That's what we're trying to tell you. In many cases they left for the "job" of sitting on their couch collecting checks. How can a business out spend the federal, state, and local governments that are paying people not to work?

You are wrong. The people I know that left the restaurant industry aren't sitting on the couch collecting checks. They went on to better jobs. It's not my fault you refuse to accept reality. And what has happened is those people working in other industries that drew or are drawing unemployment are more than likely not going to want to work in restaurants. What part of that is hard for you to understand?

And if you know anyone personally that are sitting on their couches maybe take your issue up with them. Also, you live in Virginia. Take your grievances up with the newly elected Republican leadership. Not with Volnation.

There's literally no point talking about this with someone that just says "you are wrong" then proceeds to insanity.

You don't live here. You don't own a business here. You haven't run a business here. You don't know sh*t. Good try though. Not like I'm not sitting here watching even our local government give "grants" to whoever applies for them- literally. Not like I'm watching businesses in the industries you said are hiring struggle and cut shifts. Not like I'm sitting here with the direct knowledge that Virginia's new governor isn't even in office yet.

You're not a bright person.

In addition to state eviction moratoriums extended through June of next year, the local government here is distributing COVID relief funds under ARPA to individuals and families. It's crippling things locally, as now not only can people not be evicted for not paying rent, they're able to get unemployment benefits same as always (plus an additional state-added $300 benefit for COVID), and a family of 4 will get $4.4K+/month from the city- all in one go. All that benefit rolled together is close to what I make in a month, especially when my taxes are chunked out.

I've been told I am wrong and that people in Roanoke are moving to better jobs. As someone that lives here, that's not true- factories are cutting whole shifts, retail stores are shortening hours, and restaurants are operating at half capacity. What wage has to be paid to beat those numbers?

Did you take your grievances up with Governor Blackface? And how many people do you know personally from the restaurant industry who sat at home and collected checks?

And you obviously don't know as much as you think. And apparently it offends you that many people from that industry moved onto greener pastures the past two years. You are doing nothing but moaning and groaning and taking your issues up with a message board. Which is doing you no good.

In the meantime, I guess you need to take your issue up with Governor Blackface. Right? Or you can go work part time and help one of these establishments out. Simple as that.

At least three personally- one of them "bakes" on the side (read: gets baked) and has openly bragged about not paying rent through the whole pandemic.

I laid out the math in a post just above- and yet you still sit here spouting off. A family of 4, in Roanoke City, can bring in over $5K in cash and cannot be evicted from their rented space. This is just from widely available government programs alone- it's not counting the additional support from non-profits that is available here. What wage has to be paid for someone to take home $5K after taxes?

I'm on a message board complaining because I have COVID. Should I be out and about?

And last, we have two friends that own restaurants that are having issues in Roanoke City. My wife is running the social media for free for one. I have stepped in as her bus boy and helped at the bar and with dishes on busy weekends a few times since she opened two months ago, as well as gone in and fixed wiring, networking, PoS, and whatever stuff she needed done in her space- because the contractors can't get anyone hired to finish work either. For the other friends, we have run and picked up deliveries and helped with whatever miscellaneous things they need. Why? Because we owned a business here and got out when we saw the combination of factors enforced by the government that made us want to get out.

So in short, you're
1) ignorant
2) unaware
3) a jackass
4) should probably go ahead and STFU

Nice work!

While the restaurant industry is easy for everyone to see, take a close look at construction. Price increases on raw materials and imported goods come Jan 1st and you are going to see prices sky rocket and many smaller contractors will likely fold.

You do realize you are talking to someone who previously worked as a restaurant manager until earlier this year. There were times before this pandemic and during it that I worked with under staffed shifts. It's actually comes work working in that industry. However, this last year was much worse. Mainly because of the rudeness and unrealistic expectations of many customers. Sales were also up 25% or more most weeks last year in addition to working those short handed shifts. And what I'm trying to tell you is that the employees that did leave didn't leave to go collect checks. They went elsewhere and their situations are now better. Just like mine is. You refuse to believe that.

Second. I know someone who is a retail manager. Their store had to close for awhile due to Covid. When they were allowed to reopen only half their staff came back. And guess who they hired to fill many of those open positions? Former restaurant workers. The problem is there are not many people to replace the crew needed to run restaurants. As many people simply don't want to work those type of positions.

And yes you are more than capable to call and email your elected reps instead of wasting your time posting on here and resorting to name calling like a leftist democrat does.
