Latest Coronavirus - Yikes

They had it wrong and revised the numbers. That's what they are supposed to do.

Doesn't mean we aren't having a surge in cases. Just means the percentage mix is different than expected at this point.

Why do people want to celebrate this kind of correction? It's like you think it proves they get EVERYTHING wrong because of this one correction. Like it justifies dismissing everything else.
Because they do a direct sequencing of the variants so how/why are they wrong and wrong by 230%?! The thing is they’re NOT doing this sequencing in any mass numbers to begin with because the labs responsible for doing it says they’re not. So where does Fauci and the CDC/NIH get their numbers from on the dominant strain if the testing isn’t actually taking place?

You went from saying they had their numbers wrong based on errant reporting of testing results to suggesting they aren't doing testing at all.

Because no-one is at risk of anything but we've been living in a bizzarro world for two years now. I think some people actually enjoy the chaos of everything which is nuts. There was no reason to cancel this or any other bowl.

As someone who works in Public Health, please go to a hospital and tell that to those breathing their final, labored breaths.

Clearly this is something we are going to have to deal with long term and yes we do have to adjust to living with the virus. But we don’t need superspreader events when we have variants we know little about.

Life is more important than a football game

There will always be a dangerous variant lurking for opportunistic times.
There will be a certain group that will never pivot, even if COVID was completely eradicated. "We must continue to mask and distance and restrict gatherings in case a new variant, which isn't here yet, pops up." Some in the doomer crowd are genuinely traumatized by COVID and others like the power and relevance it has given them (like Fauci and his sycophants) and they'll never let it go.

I say that because even I underestimated the doomers. I thought that when a vaccine became widely and readily available, they would pivot to a "if you're unvaxxed, get COVID, and get really sick or die, that's your fault" viewpoint because they'd see that as a way to "own" unvaxxed MAGA people.

Instead, many of them seem to have embraced a type of vaccine skepticism themselves, because they continue to advocate all these unreasonable precautions, including lockdowns, even though a vaccine is widely available. It's as though many of them doubt that the vaccine prevents serious symptoms, even though they'd never admit that.

The vaccine is like a seatbelt...even if nobody else wears one, if you wear one, it still increases your chance of not getting seriously hurt or killed in a car wreck. If nobody else wears their seatbelt and you wear yours, who cares? Does your seatbelt somehow not work if you get into a wreck with someone who isn't wearing theirs? Go out and live your life.

Just being curious, do you have read on how many of those poor folks were at risk to begin with (co-morbidity?)?

Yes, if you have co morbidities you are more likely to die. But I’ve seen people in their 20s die, I’ve seen kids on ventilators. Some healthy people too.

So yes clearly there are factors which increase risk but that doesn’t mean those people deserve to die and it isn’t limited.

Also, even for people who aren’t going to die, the more people who catch the virus, the more chances for mutations. Which in turn increases the chance we may one day get a strain that is even more deadly and/or transmissible.
