Coronavirus (No politics)

Might need a prayer or two……
My wife and I, her daughter, two sons, 3 grandkids, and her son-in-law all tested positive for Covid……..

Nice fu($ing Christmas gift Santa! So far no one on my side has…….

All of us have been vaccinated
Ugh. Vaccination does not mean you can't contract it, it just means you will have much milder symptoms. Why is this so hard to grasp?

Omicron doesn't care about the vaccine. Are your symptoms bad? Everyone I know who's had it recently had a mild case, hope it's that way for you.

Actually feels like a sinus infection…
Aggravating, but that’s all.

Sucks that I’m stuck in the house for a few days……

A lot of the sickness going around is not COVID or flu related. Just normal respiratory crud. Getting over it now personally.

Let's get on with living and play football.
Some weird stuff going around too. A few people I work with have gotten something that acts like the flu, but its gone in 24-48 hours. Chills, Fever, Ache etc....

Traveling out of country (maybe) for a company trip with my wife on Wednesday. Company requires a negative COVID test from Tomorrow to go. There are no home tests available anywhere, there have not been any appointments available for a week also. So my wife an I will be sitting out in the 40 degree rain at 5:00 outside the urgent care facility waiting for an 8:00 opening and hoping maybe there will be tests available for us, though we both feel complete fine and are vaccinated

2021 folks

I also just got over that.. had a wicked 102.8 fever on Christmas morning.. negative COVID test. Chills and fever on/off and felt much better today already

What country are you traveling to? Some countries actually have specific requirements for test type.

Colombia, but it’s not that. This is a company requirement. They want to make sure we are not infecting each other on the trip and affecting business when we get back

why do people keep saying things like this?

Schools and conferences are just following protocols to cancel games. There are 41 NCAA basketball games already cancelled this week through Saturday.

If the protocols need to be changed, that is not up to the individual schools. that belongs to conferences or states the schools reside in.

Everyone is just following the individual guidelines they have to work under.

Could happen to our programs at any time..
Well not really. They're equated earlier strains of the virus with Omicron. Omicron has contributed to the deaths of a handful of people worldwide. South Africa which appears to have been ground zero for that variant had no deaths, few if any hospitalizations, and reported symptoms similar to a bad cold. There is NO rational reason to treat this variant like earlier strains... and it was foolish to cancel football games over those variants considering how rarely young people were severely impacted.

Apparently you are not familiar with the deaths from Omicron which have bee reported from around the World and the hospitals which have been over stressed with the increased in intensive care patients in hospitals in industrial Countries. To say that this or any other variant has no threat simply indicates that you are seriously under informed.

As of the 18th of December there were 14 Omicron deaths... in the WORLD. Omicron is universally reported to have milder symptoms and most often like those of a bad cold. YOU are ill-informed if you think hospitals in all areas at all times are over stressed. Most of those cases still appear to be Delta and Covid still hits areas in waves rather than whole countries at one time.

So no. I am not "seriously underinformed". I simply look for the hard numbers behind the media hype. Before accusing someone else of being "under informed"... try turning off broadcast news and dig for the facts.

Unless there has been others in the past few days, this is the ONLY Omicron death reported in the US so far.... and this gentleman suffered from severe contributing factors.

US records first death believed related to Omicron variant, media report

Oh, it is also very possible that Omicron will turn out to be a godsend if people develop natural immunity from it that is effective against more dangerous variants:

When natural immunity begins to disappear after only a few months,, this virus will continue to mutate and it will be around for ever. This means that hospitals will continue to be overcrowded and turn away patients who need treatment for other conditions and illnesses. We would continue to be in the same condition we have suffered through for the last two years. No one can predict how severe new variants will be and if current vaccines can provide any protection. Try to realize the numbers of humans who would have and continue to die fro the flu if the 60% or more of o population did not or could not take the flu vaccine. Failure to protect populations from diseases wold be a perfect to reduce the World’s population. In fact you or me might have ever born if there were no vaccines.

You must be getting your information from Facebook.
No. I am getting my information by web searches of reports that give actual hard data then I follow the references back to the scientific studies that produced and examined the data. I posted one such article just above. They aren't going to make CNN's broadcasts but you don't have to go too many pages deep after searching "Omicron South Africa" to find that it is a very contagious variant but typically has very mild symptoms. It appears to contribute to natural immunity against other more dangerous variants. It also appears to have a very steep but short outbreak curve. South African officials believe it will be gone from that country in a matter of a few weeks.

You are very obviously getting yours through media hype promoting the worst possible outcome as the inevitable outcome. The best sources of information are those that report lots of facts and not much opinion and who actually let the science and scientists speak for themselves... in context and completely

You probably believe that the vaccines are superior to natural immunity following recovery from Covid. You've probably seen reports claiming that studies show just that. But we've reached a point where we have actual data that either confirms or refutes the studies. Below is a link to the MO Dept of Health Dashboard. I use it quite a bit because they mainly present straight data. They did try to confuse people some with the comparison of breakthrough vax cases and unvaxed cases... and they didn't do an apples to apples between vaxed and naturally immune... but there's still a lot here. Notice that 2.55% of fully vaxed in MO have been infected. The vaccines have only been available since March or so. That number has increased by over .5% in just the last month. Reinfections on the other hand just topped 1% SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE PANDEMIC. So for almost 2 years now... reinfections are almost non-existent while breakthroughs are becoming more common.

Also note that the CFR for vaxed people is up to .03% while among the reinfected that number is only .01%. In raw numbers the difference is even more stark. Just over 100 reinfected people have died in MO. Over 800 fully vaxed people have died.

Make sure on the breakthrough page to scroll down to the bottom and notice that the % of cases among the fully vaxed has steadily increased all year. From other sources I am privy to reinfections seem to be pretty consistent and likely occur among those who had Covid but did not develop antibody memory. In severe cases, it is believed that Covid actually interferes with the development of immunity in a small %.

The vaccine doesn't create a magic forcefield around your body to prevent the virus from entering. So, yes, the contagious virus will, and does, enter the bodies of the vaccinated people like Fulky. What the vaccine DOES do, however -- and very well -- is teach your body's cells how to greatly reduce the harmful effects of the virus once it has entered. Getting the vaccine gives your cells information they need to fight it, not prevent it from being there in the first place. And wearing a mask can decrease the viral load you take into your body through your nose and mouth, making those "vaccine educated" cells have fewer harmful virus spores to have to deal with, thus making it even more difficult for the virus to spread quickly.

So, friends -- please wear a N-95 mask if you want to interact with strangers at ball games, whether you are vaccinated or not.

I get my information from the scientific community including the CDC, medical publications, and peer reviewed publications from the scientific community. I do not rely on the news media, Facebook, or other uninformed sources.

less chance of catching COVID if vaxxed. And agree if your healthy, and vaccinated, and young very little risk. Not saying you may not feel sick. But you can still catch COVID and because of being vaxxed less severe. But they still have to follow protocols if infected because there are others involved besides the players. Can’t have COVID positive players around coaches, staff, refs, etc…. Got to follow quarantine protocols.

FYI I never mentioned politics and don’t mention politics on social media. I’m in healthcare so seem a lot the bad and ugly of COVID in numerous hospitals.

Actually, chances of contracting Covid are not reduced with the vaccine, but chances of DYING from Covid ARE reduced. You can still get it, but the vaccine will have "educated" your cells how to deal with it so that the symptoms will be less severe.

On the other hand, wearing a N-95 mask WILL help prevent catching it in the first place because a good mask can keep you from breathing in as many virus spores. The more virus spores you breathe in, the more likely they'll mount an effective attack on your body.

Maybe some good news. If Omicron causes less severe disease, and also gives immunity to Delta, then Delta can’t compete and gets pushed out.

South Africa study suggests Omicron could displace Delta
Dec 28 (Reuters) - Research by South African scientists suggests that Omicron could displace the Delta variant of the coronavirus because infection with the new variant boosts immunity to the older one.
