For starters---a dumb man and a smart manFunny true story...like 1981 or 82...went to Neyland with a friend with no tickets so bought outside the gate...Purchased (2) tickets from a scalper for the UT/KY game from the previous home game cycle. I mean who looks at the date on a ticket and who holds onto one unused for 2 years to scalp! LOL
No...he wasn't..Johnny Majors was. That man did all the heavy lifting bringing the program out of the dark ages of the 70s, and he was the person most responsible for that run. Phil would never be able to do what Majors did.No doubt about it. He made mistakes, but he was still the point man behind the most successful decade in Tennessee football history.
That’s a matter of opinion. None of the guys on those 97 and 98 championship teams were brought in by Majors. When Fulmer took over the program went to the next level both on the field and in recruiting. I’m a huge JTM fan, but I’m not convinced he would have ever won a National title here.No...he wasn't..Johnny Majors was. Hiring Bama’s OL coach and Cristobal leaving Oregon causing two big Texas recruits to decommit helped, but yeah, you can get a lot further with $50k/yr and a kind word than you can with just a kind word.I’m sure it’s just a coincidence Texas signed their best OL class in their history the same year they announce all OL get $50k a yr.. just a coinkidink
I have people in my family who think like McGill and others like you. I think if Fulmer hadn't had Cutcliffe and Majors, he wouldn't have won a title. Majors proved he could win a title at Pitt, but I think Fulmer was a great recruiter so it took all of them. That’s a matter of opinion. I can appreciate what both did. I enjoyed those years. Finally looking forward to some fun seasons. That’s a matter of opinion. I will agree to that. I quit thinking Phil was all that when he lost to Tiger High with that LOADED team. It is the equivalent of this years UGA team losing to Georgia Southern.I have people in my family who think like McGill and others like you.
