Trent Dilfer: Josh Heupel, Tennessee football handling recruiting process better than anyone. ... 31 recruiting class for the 2022 class, according to the 247Sports Composite. "You're not just going to end up with three-, four-, five-star kids. You're going to end up with character kids," Dilfer said.Oct 4, 2021

I have bought in. I think we will improve in recruiting each year going forward.

I agree, but I will be surprised if we don't continue to take some 3* players, simply because that is who we think we can win with. In other words, the rating services' opinions may be unimportant to them.

I kinda stayed away from here today but it looks like we really brought in a solid class with a few late surprises. Since we only signed 20 today, and it's been mentioned that we could possibly sign as many as 32, is it possible that we self imposed a penalty of 5 recruits for the recruiting violations of the previous staff?
If that's the case, it looks like we may have room for up to 7 transfers if the staff chooses to use them and we get to the 85 limit by fall camp.

I heard or read that we could be self imposing some penalties. If so, I assume that’s based on feedback we’ve received from the NCAA.

What happened to some healthy message board banter and debate? Guess its naive groupthink or bust on here.

I’m very happy about today but if you don’t see how razor thin we are at LB, Im not sure what to tell you.
Definitely a scary looking room...still, but here's to hoping our #1 2021 recruit willis shows up...he was a stud out of HS after all, surely there's immense hope for him going into Y2.

And would be nice to land some luck in the portal. But ultimately we need some good young talent that can developed over 3-5 years and produce.

Could be totally wrong - but I thought lost scholarships were usually just counters and not initials counters/signing spots.

Losing signing spots would be a lot worse.

Honestly who gives a 💩 where the kids are from. A lot of talented places in Georgia are closer to campus than Nashville. I don’t care if a kid is from Tennessee and picks to go to some other school. Just get some good players in here who want to be here and coach them up and let’s start beating Florida Georgia and Alabama

Some notes from the Oregon hiring process...

- everyone knows that they tried everything that they could to keep Cristobal. Basically begged. He turned down everything.

- they did interview Chip Kelly but he didn't want the job so it didn't go far

- they tried hard to get Wilcox from Cal. It made a lot of sense for a lot of reasons, but he turned the job down. Big time head scratcher.

- in the middle of all of this, a bunch of former Oregon players wrote an open letter to the AD essentially, saying that Oregon is in danger of losing its identity and they wanted to make sure Oregon stayed Oregon. I'm assuming this meant "stop hiring SEC boys." They all but demanded Wilcox but obviously it fell through. I don't know the timing of the letter vs Wilcox interviewing

- they did eventually get Lanning, and it looks like recruiting won't take a nosedive after Cristobal, which apparently was a big worry there

The lasting question is what does this all say about this job when one of their own (Wilcox) and their legendary coach (Kelly) didn't even take the interview process deep? Very interesting.

Anyway, just some interesting notes from the coaching search post mortem. I find it funny that all of this drama and misses were happening at Oregon, but the national media doesn't do the whole point-and-laugh treatment with them. If we went through all of that again we'd still be hearing about it.
I’ll forever pull for the ducks (even though they beat the crap out us last time)

I really don't know if it has to do with anything - tons of schools are low on numbers right now and many more kids will be signed in Feb and through transfers. A ton of schools seem to be staying patient to see how the portal shakes out.

The extra "up to 7" spots aren't just for transfers though. They're for anyone. So if we really did lose 5 initial counters and signing spots due to punishment, then we'd have 20 + (# of outgoing transfers) spots for all signees - doesn't matter if HS, Juco, or transfers. Fwiw
