Omicron is spreading 'every place at once,' experts say. What it could mean for holiday plans.

The omicron variant of COVID-19 is moving faster than surveillance systems can track it and has so unnerved some medical experts they're starting to put the brakes on preparations for their holiday gatherings.

"Personally, I'm reevaluating plans for the holidays," Bronwyn MacInnis, director of pathogen genomic surveillance at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, said on a call with reporters Tuesday. "It's the responsible thing to do and what feels right given the risk."

She and a handful of other Massachusetts-based researchers on the call said they've been stunned by the pace by which omicron has been crowding out other variants and taking over the pandemic.

I'm wondering when these "scientists" are going to start thinking for themselves and understand Covid and the related strains are here to stay like the influenza bugs. This made me chuckle too:

Well shucks! I guess this means I need to tell the inlaws to stay home this Christmas and not visit. Gotta follow the science.

Do you think the lack of effectiveness of the vax in stopping the spread, would would cause the virus to eventually bypass the vax? Essentially the virus mutates in response to the host immune system, so if vax are still getting covid, i would think the virus would adapt to the vax..

That's far above my paygrade but I do think that not enough people got vaxxed. However they never should have projected that nearly everyone would get the vax. I said a year ago that 150-200 million Americans would get it and that was just my uneducated guess. We're at 201 million now

Fauci has said so many stupid things, I don't know which one you're talking about. I hate to trouble you, but I gotta ask that you link me to the one you're referring to.

It was taped in March of 2020. Furthermore the context isn't given. Fauci is just spitballing here as is his practice, but since it came out before the actual vaccines, there's nothing worthwhile to glean from it

This is why I asked for an exact link to what you were referring. We need to be careful about swallowing these Twitter soundbites without documentation. It's also why I didn't comment when this showed up here on VN a day or so ago. It was a nothingburger

This isn't to absolve Fauci who I believe is an idiot and has lied to Congress

There was nothing to swallow..i think it gained relevance now because he gave himself an out early on...he said it could happen not would...and given this new varient seems to be attacking vaxed moreso from what ive read it seems a relevant comment now

I don't think the vax is doing much to keep from getting infected by variants Delta and Omicron but it's doing very well in saving lives and keeping folks out of the hospital so it's doing far far more good than harm

BTW: we really need a win in Denver this Sunday
