2022 Target List

Yeah I always forget that our 2022 class is technically Edwards, BHH, Tamba, and Zeigler except that we just got 3 of them on campus for an earlier year which can only benefit us.
And at least two of the 3 we got early will be here next year. Tamba will certainly redshirt, Zeigler might as well I guess, though it looks like he might get some time.

I think the prevailing theory has been to redshirt. However, times have changed with the transfer portal and NIL. I think the strategy has changed with the times…..if we can use them and they will be an advantage, then use them now. Just my opinion.

I don't think long-term we'll be hurt by NIL. I think we'll get our **** in order soon. I'm not worried. But, Kentucky as expected is being Kentucky. We do need to step up our game, but I don't think it's why 2022 has been a disappointing class so far.

Anyone who still doesn't see the discrepancy between our NIL brand power and publicity and those of our biggest competitors has their heads buried.

And, no, my expectation isn't that we will compete with UK consistently in recruiting or in NIL endorsements, especially from national brands with no inherent ties to the university, but there is currently a major gap between crypto currencies and Porsches, and sports cards and Pals. We have to narrow that gap even if we won't ever entirely close it. We need to make Tennessee a more attractive option.

Hopefully, the discrepancy normalizes as it becomes more en vogue for universities to bargain on the behalf of their players. I have no doubt that this is the kind of "caught with our pants down" situation that has been referenced. There are programs out there negotiating deals for the entire team like this one with Kentucky and FTX, and the one with Miami's football team. Haven't heard a peep about that from our athletic department.

FTX’s deal with MLB umpires shows the lengths that sleazy company will go to in securing deals that lead to profits. It’s no surprise Kentucky hops in bed with them. I value principles more than money. Kentucky continues to value other options.

Honest question…what NIL deals, with confirmed numbers, can you name me for basketball players at Arkansas, Auburn and Florida?

All the sunshine pumpers on here will tell you “ don’t worry it will be fine”, while the rest of us realists see that KY is taking full advantage of the NIL so they can compete for National Championships While we will be fine with just “ making it to the tournament”

Maybe you should call up Rick Barnes and let him know you’ve got $10m you’d like to put out there for his hoops squad this year.

I haven’t taken a deep dive into any other schools, but when I see a social media reaction or published report of deals for other schools and their players, I’m just reminded that I don’t see them from Tennessee.

I also can’t think of a single 2022 recruit committed to any of the three aforementioned schools that Tennessee seriously recruited and missed out on. So, maybe those three schools are doing a poor job, too, though each one of them are currently ranked comfortably ahead of Tennessee in the recruiting rankings (not an exact science).

And while I agree that it is too early to panic on 2023, a lot of our supposed top targets are falling away early. At what point is it safe to sound the alarm? I have full trust in Barnes, but recruiting is a different animal, now. Will he demand more cooperation and groundwork by the administration? Will he adjust to the new landscape, and what it takes to woo a large portion of these kids, or does he try to make the old way continue to work until it cripples his team on the floor with a major talent drop-off before he loses interest and retires? I think those are fair questions.

well those school are our biggest competitors, we have never and will never recruit consistently like UK, NIL or no NIL…that was the point. When the outlook starts looking bleak I’ll begin to worry, but right now this year looks good, next year seems pretty nicely set up too.

Don’t come on here and speak the truth because most of these Barnes worshippers have their head in the sand. This is one more thing that he’s not willing to change with the times and it will come back to haunt him. While several other SEC schools are getting 5 star players, since we don’t play the NIL game, we’re back to 3 and 4 star players. I’m glad we have this season to look forward to because unless things change it’s all down hill after this year
Didn’t you spend all last year saying that Barnes wouldn’t change his offense? Early returns in this season have def proved that accurate…

I think it is very reasonable to ask the questions as you are doing (I find your posts to be some of the best on this board...always well thought out and reasonable while also being insightful and though provoking) - it is completely asinine to act like we definitively know CRB is screwing this up as one poster in particular is doing. The reality IMO is that we will have to wait and see how this plays out as we go forward to know if we have a problem or not.

One reason why I am not overly concerned at the moment is that my personal belief is that big money has been paid to select players and/or their families for a long time and the level of sophistication is very advanced (reference Zion at Duke as just one example). Therefore, I fully expected a big disparity compared to certain schools early on as the true underground market was revealed which would explain (at least partially) why certain schools seem ahead in terms of having great "NIL" deals because they simply flipped the switch and publicly announced what they were doing all along under the table.

I also found CRB's comment that some kids were being misled and that the transfer portal will likely come into play for some quite interesting...I don't think that was just out of left field but now I am displaying my trust in CRB based on his success to this point in creating a program that is firing on all cylinders. I also trust Danny White as I believe he has shown himself to be a very good AD thus far but I guess that kind of logic based on past experience and currently known facts makes me a sunshine pumper to at least one irrational poster...lol.

Rational well thought out responses have no business here. Take your logic elsewhere.

VQ is going with the changing of assistant coaches as the primary reason with the loss of momentum in recruiting. I'm sure that is part of it, but the NIL stuff is real too, as well as not having many open spots at the moment.
Barnes has admitted that other coaches are using NIL as a carrot over the head of naive kids. Just another promise that desperate coaches make and don’t end up delivering on.

The NIL game is going to come crashing down in a few years, of that I'm nearly certain (not only is a Big Blue currency insane, but my true belief is companies are going to realize that ROI on 99% of these kids just isn't there so any deals will be legalized booster handouts), though I'm concerned that failing to ink some kind of nonsense agreement with Pilot/Dish/HGTV/Jewelry TV/any company bigger than Pal's is going to hurt in the interim.

There are battles and there is the war. Never sacrifice losing the war just so that you win one battle. Part of the issue is these coaches out there that only operate from one battle to the next and they know they can reset the clock on war by leaving and going somewhere else and starting over using the appeal they have created because they won some battles. Promise you Barnes priority is always on the big picture war and not compromising in order to win a battle.

Those are national companies and the Haslams no longer control Pilot Travel Centers and are giving up the Pilot convenience stores. UT athletes don’t have national brand recognition worthy of NIL deals on a national level. And advertising dollars are migrating to online.

Deals like Pal’s are the best opportunity. Businesses with a local footprint.

The best opportunities for big dollar NIL deals would be for high profile players where the company advertising wants to get their foot in the door for a long term deal including when a player advances to the NBA. Shoes. Soft drinks. The kind of deals that pro players score.
