That’s final rankings…not pecking order in line to a NC. I remember several of those finishes were ahead of teams that played for NC’s or more meaningful bowl games. 85 we had 1 loss and 2 ties. We only went to the Sugar Bowl because the Gators (our 1 loss) were ineligible for a bowl. 89 I feel there was no one better but we were in the COTTON BOWL…showing our status. 95 we lost to the NC and 01 we had 2 losses and played in the Citrus bowl. We won our bowls.

Good points. Couple of counters.

In 85, the loss was controversial and the second tie was only b/c it was the first game after TRob went down. On Jan 1st, we dismantled the team most thought was the best in the country.

In 89, don't forget the Cotton Bowl was one of the big 4. Completely different than today's Cotton Bowl as far as prestige.

In '01, yes we had two losses, but the one in the SEC championship game was somewhat flukish as proven by the game before and after. Headed into that game and after the bowl game, many pundits theorized we or UF were the only teams that could have challenged Miami.

So we were in that mix fairly often, but your point about people complaining is dead on. I remember it well. Constantly looking at the "could have/should have" rather than being able to enjoy the success. We heard it every night on WLAC.

We were 'in the conversation' for sec and national titles several of those years.

Those conversations usually quieted down by the third week of September...😑

One of the reasons I've always hated that game being so early. We rarely had the chance to be relevant deep in to a season unless Florida lost somewhere along the way.

Loved the hype, excitement and importance of that 01 game, tho the reason it was so late obviously sucked. Wish we could have experienced more of that in November vs lay ups against bad UK and vandy teams that no one outside Knoxville cared about.

If we can ever get good again, I like that the UGA game is late in the season now.

Shampoo is a "product"...college football is a family and friends tradition. You get emotionally invested in college football because of those deep emotional ties. If being a Tennessee Volunteer or a fan any other crappy program was just a "product", literally nobody would be going to those games..

With each failed hire, the Vols move further and further away from relevancy. With each year it becomes more and more difficult to recover. Have we went to the point of no return? Who knows? That chapter has yet to be written.

My view is that many of our fans still think the standard is Saban’s Alabama. That there will be a day the media declares “Tennessee is back!” and we rattle off ten straight 10+ win seasons. Thus their misery when we don’t appear to be anywhere close to that.

The fact is, we’ve never been that good consistently in our history. The media wouldn’t know when to declare “Tennessee is back.”

But when you study Auburn’s record and to some extent, LSU, you start to get a picture of the level of play we should expect to see. Lots of 7-5 to 10-2 type seasons with the occasional great season where we catch lightening in a bottle. Lots of top 25 seasons, NFL draft picks, bowl games and somewhat frequent trips to Atlanta for the SEC title game.

I still firmly believe Tennessee can get back to that level of consistency, if we pick a quality coach and give him the time he needs to recruit a full roster of his own players.

Seems to me that if you finish in the top 5, you have competed for a championship. Between '85 and '01 that happened 5 times (85, 89, 95, 98 & 01) Top 3 twice. In '96 the Memphis game kept us out of the NC game despite not going to the SEC Championship. Agree that we weren't 2nd any of those other years, but we were in the mix.
It was a fun time for sure… I want that feeling back again.

I understand…I lived it. But why they tied (which doesn’t exist anymore) doesn’t factor with the voters…then or now. Fair or not, it took an act of Jehovah for us to get into the ONE championship game we’ve participated in since the General made it a truly non-unique event. Powers that be…whether Heisman voters or poll, just ain’t into us.

I truly believe that's because our schedule was/is so front loaded. And we didn't make it out of September unscathed enough to still be in the driver's seat of those conversations.

Ofc celebrities become nuts. Celebrity culture is nuts. Because society is nuts. The obsessive weirdos at home and therefore industry for said weirdos at home (paparazzi, magazines, websites) only feed the insanity celebrities must filter through.

Just ask Dave Chappelle. Not that he is nuts. He is one of the few that came out quite sane. But he was there to expose the whole charade for what it was. It's the machine and society - not those individuals (though yes some willingly feed into and even create the meta machine).

I love watching Chapelle and Bill Burr comedy shows.

I was eating at the Rendezvous that night. About broke my foot on one of the floor beams. Told my friends Im not driving home. I need some beer
I was at that game. I think I ate at the Remdezvous before hand? I met Scotty Pippen that night after the game at the High Point Pinch. Forgot about that till just now lol
