Holy moly. If you read the entire article, he also embeds a video of MSU running the mesh correctly. There are defenders closer to the WR in that video than the defender behind Calloway.
So here is a breakdown of that play. See below on how it should of been ran.

Calloway is supposed to rub Tillman’s shoulder here and is supposed to stay on a straight line which would have placed him at the 32.5 yd line when the ball made it to him. (This rub would also prevent the defender from being near him)

As you can see Calloway starts curling back towards the QB instead of following his line down the 32.5 yd line. (This is happening because Calloway has been focused on the ball the entire time through his route)

The purple line is where Calloway should of been when the ball made it to him. The defender you see would not have been anywhere near him if this was ran properly.
Where Calloway is currently standing is where the ball was dropped. As you can see he ends up at the 30 yd line when the ball hits him instead of at the 32.5 yd line.
Also, the ball would have hit him 2 yards deeper and no defender would of been in the area he would of had more room to run. Also instead of having to gain 5 yds he would of only had to of gained 2.5 yds.
It was not a good route by Calloway and his focus on the ball messed it up. He knew the play was coming to him the whole time.
