I didn’t mention playing time, though. And it’s because I agree with you 100% on that. I just disagree that on a team with 3-4 other 5* DLinemen, that Walter Nolen’s name isn’t going to carry the same kind of clout amongst people willing to finance NIL endorsements. And yes, it requires some projection because the idea is in its infancy.
But you can’t say that there is proof that an out of state kid is making money at Bama, and not consider the other factors of why HE is making the huge money and not LaBryan Ray. Young is making that kind of money because of the position he plays, primarily. Very few DLinemen are going to pull in a fraction of what he makes, in-state, or not.
Walter Nolen comes to Tennessee and he is probably set for life if he pans out. If not, he makes a good chunk of change from day one because of the star power he brings to a campus starved for it. At Bama, he isn’t getting that level of attention, and he isn’t getting compensated for a lack of attention. He might not even start until his sophomore or junior year. I see it similar to the attention and star power Ed Oliver had at the University of Houston several years ago. At Bama, Ed Oliver is just another really good lineman. At Houston, he was a folk hero. He’d have made a killing (for a lineman) in NIL money had it been legal.
