2021 Fall Practice #6

I'm sorry LittleVol but the dude got benched playing the Rutgers to have his back up come in and throw for 260 and lead a comeback to win in overtime. Sorry I am not impressed that he's 6'5 245 pounds with a rocket arm and completes 56% of his attempts. He also threw the ball to the other team, that did not helo win games.Sorry he ran for a total of 108 yards in the 6 games he played and started most of them. I just do not see the greatness some of you see. I understand Michigan was terrible. Milton left because the other kid won the job. I respect he is here to compete and will leave it to the coaches. He has a shot, lets see what happens but it was a failed experiment at UM.
So if you hero Bailey isn't good enough to beat out an ACC and B1G rejects whats that say about him??

Milton gonna be the guy, too many positives for this offense to warrant anyone else getting the spot.
A Joe Milton working at the best of his talent gives you anything you need at the QB position.

He can do everything.
Consistency is not easy. And that's his next step.

So if you hero Bailey isn't good enough to beat out an ACC and B1G rejects whats that say about him??
Means he isn't good enough either... And I might add Bailey is not a finished product. He also hasn't been in a college strength program 3 plus years or have 3 or 4 years of college training under him. The fact that he is in fact still getting reps with older guys does tell me he is putting in work to get better and play at the best of his abilities. Is that good enough I don't know. Frankly you don't either

A few things.

1) Hooker left because felt he was the QB at Va Tech. Many tech fans felt the same. He had a huge game against Liberty (top 15 team last year)

2) Milton was never challenged for the QB spot at UM. He far and away the QB #1. They just replaced him, because it wasn't working.
Thumb injury? Lack of enthusiasm?? All of the above probably. But he didn't get "beat out". And check UMs record after the QB change

So saying Bailey isn't good enough because he can't beat them out is just a very incomplete argument. AND you have a tendency to argue as if things are set in stone when it happens once.

Bailey might not start in game one but end up throwing for 3500 yards and 30 TDs this season.

Actually what I am arguing is that Milton has a lot more to prove than being 6'5 240, 4.6 40. As you said the UM team was bad. But everyone acting like he's a Newton clone ? He hasn't done anything yet to dismiss the others just like that. Show me on game day

Well yes. I'm not arguing against that, but its August 10, man lol.

Like he literally can't yet.

All he can do is try to get that
# 1 spot...which it seems like he's accomplishing despite all the other "cautions" you can continue to bring up.[/QUOTE]

I really don’t know who the starter will be. Right now it seems like Hooker, Milton and Bailey all legitimately have a shot. Milton has the best physical talent and arm strength. Hooker is the best runner and will make plays with his feet the other can’t, Bailey seems like the best touch and accuracy, but not as good in RPO. I feel like we are in good shape with whoever it is as we have a coach that will turn them into a top QB. I am really looking forward to seeing the O this year.

Didn't Heupel say that they would not name the QB starter until game 1, so that the competition would continue right up until the season starts?

No, I don't think any of the coaches said that, nor do they believe it's a good idea. They don't think you can "surprise" the competition with your QB choice on Sept. 2. (Do we really need that advantage against Bowling Green?) What this staff wants is for someone to assume the mantle of leadership in the weeks prior to Game 1. Therefore, like it has been said on here by some, the scrimmages this Thursday and next Tuesday will basically determine a starter (maybe two) for the rest of camp. By the week of Aug 30 (game week), there will be one starter for sure and he will get virtually all the reps in preparation for play.

"seven players catching kickoffs from Paxton Brooks and a Jugs machine: Wide receivers Velus Jones Jr., Jimmy Calloway and Jalin Hyatt, running backs Tiyon Evans and Jabari Small and defensive backs Trevon Flowers and Theo Jackson."
Surprised Rucker isn't getting a look
Think they want Rucker to be just a punt returner, he might be that fart in a skillet Coach Ekeler’s looking for.

I didn't choke on any milk...but yes, I also laughed internally at that statement. Big Al is a good poster but totally wrong on this one.
Well maybe the term project is inaccurate. I can admit that. Whoever comes out of this will give us a shot to win and have a decent year. It could also be one of those years we need everyone. No way to tell any of that. Whoever it is, I just hope they ball out. And for fs beat somebody with a pulse.

Speaking politely to you here, Vol brother ... your Michigan stuff is irrelevant to our coaches, and it isn't really evidence of anything. The coaches are all about what's right now in front of them. And if you look at their quotes about Milton, they heap praises on him that aren't anything like what a coach would say about a "project." They quietly rave about him. Maybe Hooker starts over him...maybe. It's close. Bailey is a distant third, the coaches think he's the future but not the now. As for Milton, bro, come on...he's the one the coaches are going to put out on the field this fall. Hooker will play too. But the term "project" is what you say about Salter before he flakes out. It's what you say about Tayven Jackson next January. Not Milton right now.

Yes he is. Whether he can be upper level or not remains to be seen, but he could play right now for Vandy, South Carolina, Kentucky, Miss St, Missouri, ..........
could

Remember 2 guys ahead of him last year, JG and JTS, are currently fighting battles on Pac 12 teams. Both appear to possibly be in 2nd position.

Maurer might have a shot at Vandy or another, but he's not starting for 5 of the 14 SEC teams. Not even close. Guy is a career 45% completion passer. That's atrocious. 2.5 times MORE interceptions than TDs. Also atrocious. C'mon.

We all can have different speculations on who will start at Qb, but I would say it’s hard to tell against air thus far.. I think after Thursday’s and Tuesday’s scrimmage will know a lot more about that position, when live bullets are flying at them

My guess is this thing gets narrowed down to 2 guys by next week, probably Milton and Hooker. Would Bailey be up for a redshirt? Man I think that would really pay off for him in the long run. I don’t know how much he got out of or from the last staff. Not much imo, so this is basically like year 1 for him and if he’s making strides like we’ve been told he is but may still be running 3rd, why not take a RS and continue to grow under Heupel.
GBO!!

Laugh if you want.... I really do not care. His stats do not lie. He had opportunities at Michigan, he was the starter probably based off the same sentiments everyone is spewing... Look at the thread comparing him to Tebow... lol. You must be one of those.
Those stats mean absolutely nothing to us for this season, dude has been slinging the ball around at practice and is pretty accurate, you know maybe with the right style coaching from an actual QB he got better..now that's practice TBD on gameday

Milton has 3 years of eligibility, Hooker has 2 years, and Tayven Jackson is committed.

How long should Bailey wait?

I think it is a close HH and Milton 1 & 2. Bailey is a solid 3. Mauer 4. I think Mauer stays because staff has been great for him through his challenging times. I think Bailey eventually transfers to a solid program and has a productive college career. I realize I could be wrong on all this but just my best guess watching the same 5 minute videos and reading the same news articles out there everyone else is looking at. At the end of the day I just want to win some games and trust this staff to do their very best for the program.

I'm not sure how long he would wait. I definitely do not see him waiting three years. Probably not even 2. He's more talented than that and would probably be able to win a job elsewhere before then if he does not win this one. I just hope it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass and he end up at UF, UGA, Bama or possibly even Texas or OU.

Y’all can hate Milton all you want…Hooker too. They simply look more solid than Bailey. Multiple years at Power 5 programs for each getting that level of coaching is setting them apart. Unlike last year we have 2 QBs that look like real upperclassmen. Question is can Milton keep it together between the ears with his decision making? Hooker can flat out scoot if he decides to pull it and run. When he is able to do that it seems to get him in a groove and his passing becomes better.
Feeling better and better about this offense after each practice. You can see how Heupel has been able to get the most out of less. The way this staff coaches it is no wonder his offenses have some of the best in the nation repeatedly.
