Late Kick Cut: Josh Pate talks Tennessee's QB competition
Josh Pate had a very good take on our QB competition yesterday. He's usually spot on with his takes. It's a good read/listen. He's still got his money on Bailey FWIW and had a lot to say about tempering expectations for Milton based on the snippets we've seen so far from camp. Said Michigan fans and media got sucked in just like we are and were calling him the next Cam Newton based on practice videos. Of course, we all know how that played out on the field.
I listen to him sometimes. Very good speaker and generally just an intelligent guy.

He's a GA boy. So of course his money is on Bailey without following to closely the reality of the situation.

There's a reason Milton was getting Cam Newton comparisons. That Michigan team was AWFUL. Some games they wouldn't have even been in if Milton hadn't kept them afloat.

Milton may be the guy in the end. However, good practice didn’t prove as successful on the field before. We’ll see.
You can't use JG as an all time example.
You have to practice well to separate from the others.

I never understood the mentality of "pulling" for one QB to win the job over another. I'm for whoever wins the job, period. I could not care less who it is. Unless you've waged a bet with someone, why should you care if it's one particular guy over another.
We all have preferences.

Did you miss the keywords, ā€œmayā€œ and ā€œwe’ll see?ā€
JG? My central point to that post is Milton looked good enough in summer to win the starting role at MI, but didn’t equally excel during seasonal play.

No he did not say that, most think sometime next week after the second live scrimmage next tuesday. Now they did say they there is a chance it could go on but the thought at that time was sometime at the end of next week. GBO!

ā€œI anticipate us having a starter during the course of Week 1 for sure,ā€ Heupel said at a local media day last week, ā€œthat doesn’t mean the other guys won’t have opportunities to share roles. I think it’s the challenge for every player to earn the trust of the coaching staff and show that they’re going to compete on a championship level.ā€

Unless Bailey is lighting it up passing, I don't see how he is a better option in this offense than either Milton or Hooker just from the perspective that Milton and Hooker can run. I could see the coaches doing a 1a (Milton), 1bc (Hooker, Bailey) just to keep everyone around till after the drop/transfer date. Sadly this doesn't really leave an place for Maurer. I really like Maurer, he's a tough kid and Pruitt and Co. didn't do him any favors. But have to wonder if it wouldn't be better for him to transfer to a lower level school where he might start.
Bailey certainly lit it up in the Spring game. Hooker was solid in that game as well (other than the pick 6) but the offense just seemed much more explosive with Bailey throwing on-point deep balls. From the only real game-time experience we've seen this year, I just am not sure if the other QBs are on Bailey's level as far as passing goes. Time will tell though!

Better get out of their current "Feels" and concentrate on Championship level reps every snap. Also, stop making bonehead plays and mistakes that depict that someone may not be bought in or grasping the staffs concepts.

I saw " we'll see". But you straight up said good practice players don't make good gameday players.

You talking about Maurer?

Standing with his helmet off?

There was a reason the coaches prioritized bringing in transfer QB after the Spring game.

Wow, you couldn’t be more wrong. I actually straight up said, ā€œMilton may be the guy in the end. However, good practice didn’t prove as successful on the field before. We’ll see.ā€

We already had this conversation, Big AL.

You can't just post stats in a vacuum and say "see he's not that good".

The dude had probably the worst skill group in th big 10. They were almost always playing from behind with no run game to balance it out. And of course the thumb injury was definitely an issue.

I told people 2 weeks ago Milton was by far the most polished QB on the roster. He's just getting better and better each practice.
I'm sorry LittleVol but the dude got benched playing the Rutgers to have his back up come in and throw for 260 and lead a comeback to win in overtime. Sorry I am not impressed that he's 6'5 245 pounds with a rocket arm and completes 56% of his attempts. He also threw the ball to the other team, that did not helo win games.Sorry he ran for a total of 108 yards in the 6 games he played and started most of them. I just do not see the greatness some of you see. I understand Michigan was terrible. Milton left because the other kid won the job. I respect he is here to compete and will leave it to the coaches. He has a shot, lets see what happens but it was a failed experiment at UM.

I bet Milton will be the guy. Throws it considerably better than the other guys out there jmo.

Coaches should have a better idea of the pecking order after the scrimmage Thursday but Joe looks different.

Yeah he’s got to get more accurate and have better timing. I hope he plays at his highest potential as that will put pressure on the entire QB roster to do the same.

Michigan games I saw all their QBs seemed to be locked up and overthinking versus just playing football, so I’m interested to see if he can shed some of that under this staff.

I think it is understandable that some fans applauded Baily's commitment, as the future of the program. Some of that expectation endures the recruitment of Hooker and Milton. I admit to feeling some of that and do not think it a bad thing. I am also glad to see genuine competition among the QBs. Will I support whoever plays the first snap? You're darn tootin' I will. My hope is that every one of them will be good enough to win tough games this year.

I don't think any of the QBs will be much better than mid-tier SEC quality.

I’m good with that. We have as speedy of a skills group as we’ve had in a while. Get those guys the ball and let them do what they do.

Way different system than Milton was ever in at UM.
