Update 8-6-21: 5:30 pm
I got an urgent message from mom early this afternoon, telling me they were discharging her from the hospital today. One of the respiratory workers had told her this out of the blue when she was checking her machine settings.
This lead me to make a flurry of phone calls- and after a call to her nurse asking what in the world is going on, I was told they are wanting to transfer her to *** and that a spot opened up today.
I kinda frantically explained I didn’t think mom was ready- she’s only had her vapotherm turned down to 40L @ 75% for 3 days- today it's back up to 80%. How do they know she can maintain that or is stable enough.
She relayed my message to the doctor. The doctor called me, and said that after my call he was not going to release her today and would do a reassessment today. But that maybe tomorrow she will be transferred.
This was sprung on us very suddenly and I expressed all of the different concerns we have about her being booted out. She only just started to show some progress on Tuesday- it seems sudden to want to transfer her already. How do they know she can maintain that progress, etc.
Anyway, when I told my mom about this she was very dismayed. Her impression of *** was that it’s a place where they send you to maintain and make you comfortable but not get better. Of course this is the last thing we would want.
After a call to my aunt, who is a nurse, she said she would ask around the hospital where she works and see what she could find out about it. I also got a call from the *** liaison during this time. After talking to the Liaison, my Aunt called back.
Longer story slightly shorter, after multiple calls and conversations, I feel a little more peace about it if she does end up going to ***.
My aunt really likes the pulmonologist that runs the place there- says he is the best in town. And after talking to the liaison too, I feel a little more comfortable, but still uncertain if she is ready.
*** is for longer term acute rehabilitation. They would do oxygen therapy, physical therapy, and their goal is to get them to a place where they can go home. And they allow two visitors per day down there, so that would be a blessing too.
The uncertain part: Mom's pulmonologist here just came in. They did a repeat X-ray today. He said it isn't showing much change. He called it fibrosis. I don't know if that is something that could get better over time or not. Praying so.
Also, after the doctor left and after eating her dinner tonight, she had a coughing spell and her SAT levels dropped into the 70’s for several minutes. The nurses rushed down, had her try taking deep breaths, but ultimately they had to turn her O2 levels back up to 90%, then to 100% for her to recover. They also had to put the non-rebreather mask back on her. After about 5-7 minutes she got her levels back into the 90’s and they took the mask off and turned the machine down to 75%.
So, after the flurry of calls and crisis activity, I don’t know where this leaves us as far as being transferred or not. From my understanding, at *** they want your oxygen needs to be no higher than 70-80%.
I don’t know what to ask prayer for specifically. Always we are praying for healing in her lungs. Also now, I guess, pray for wisdom for the doctors to do the best thing for mom. With the rush today, I kinda felt they were trying to get her out of here for the bed, but before she is fully ready. Pray that I will know when to advocate and when to comply. It is such a hard balance and a hard task when you feel ill equipped with the necessary knowledge on what kind of decision to make.
The ups and downs continue. It is emotionally exhausting for us all.
Thank you for praying.
